“Over-the-top” romance drama that’s “best enjoyed as schlocky escapism” now streaming in the UK

A wild sci-fi romance drama dubbed “over-the-top” and “schlocky” has landed in full on ITVX.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about the TV show “Roswell, New Mexico,” which weaves its tale around Liz Ortecho (Jeanine Mason), the daughter of undocumented immigrants, who finds herself back in her childhood home of Roswell, New Mexico. The storyline is inspired by Melinda Metz’s beloved “Roswell High” book series.

Upon arrival, she unexpectedly encounters Max Evans, her adolescent infatuation, who turns out to be an extraterrestrial disguising his powers for the sake of living among humans.

In their rekindled relationship, she safeguards his hidden truth while a budding romance flourishes. However, this tender moment could crumble as an imminent act of violence potentially unveils the existence of extraterrestrial beings on our planet.

Initially aired in 2019, “Roswell, New Mexico” spanned over four seasons until its conclusion in 2022. Now, catch all 52 episodes of this series without any cost on ITVX.

Currently, the show is rated at 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, while it scores a somewhat lower 62% on the Popcornmeter.

In their assessment, LatinaMedia.Co stated that “Roswell” effectively combines political elements with its inherent escapism, resulting in a delightful watch that maximizes its outrageous science fiction romantic concept for pure enjoyment.

The Arts Desk commented, ‘This works best when seen as a fun escape from reality, with an otherworldly twist thrown in to keep things interesting whenever the story starts to lag. Keep your eyes on the skies!’

After the series finale, I, as a fan, was intrigued by what showrunner Chris Hollier shared with Entertainment Weekly regarding the potential continuation of the show, had it not been canceled.

He mentioned that this [conclusion] was designed to neatly conclude season five for us. There would have been even more excitement to come afterward.

He suggested that if they had continued with the story of “Roswell, New Mexico,” multiple time leaps would have led to a “heritage finale.” In other words, the narrative would have concluded in a way that left a lasting impact or legacy on the show.

He added: “What happens when you come across the people you wish to spend your life with? How do you create your own fairy tale ending? I was excited about the direction we were taking those characters. We had discussed concluding the story years from now, offering a resolution for all our romantic pairs.

Roswell, New Mexico seasons one to four are available to stream now on ITVX.

Digital Spy has launched its first print magazine! You can purchase it, titled “British Comedy Legends,” from newsstands or online for a special price of only £3.99.
