Beloved radio star tragically dies in London hospital after four decades on air as colleagues pay tribute

A much loved radio star has tragically died in hospital after being on air for four decades.

Since 2007, Simon Marlow had been a dedicated member of the British Forces Broadcasting Service. Regrettably, he passed away in London on Friday, June 27th.

Back in 1987, the speaker got his initial opportunity in radio broadcasting as a freelance voice talent. Over the years, he held multiple positions at various UK radio stations such as Radio City, 2-TEN, Chiltern Radio, and Classic FM.

I found myself deeply immersed and eventually recognized as a regular figure at BFBS, gracing the airwaves with my voice and contributing significantly to the production process off-camera.

Throughout his tenure at BFBS, Simon was assigned to various locations worldwide, such as Afghanistan, Cyprus, Brunei, Germany, the Falkland Islands, and Northern Ireland.

Recognized for his profound affection for music and his drive to unite the military community, Simon’s voice often served as a familiar friend to soldiers deployed globally.

He was described as a ‘force of nature’ by colleagues.

In 2020, amidst the Coronavirus outbreak, Simon found himself residing in Gibraltar. He had intentions of retiring a short while later, across the border, in Spain.

The broadcaster was most recently based in Northern Ireland working as a station manager for BFBS.

Heartfelt tributes have been pouring in for the celebrity, with BFBS CEO, Ben Chapman, among those praising him as someone who truly made a positive impact.

In any location where Simon was present, regardless of who he was with, joyful laughter was never absent. He had an impact that left a lasting impression.

It was shared on the official X account of BFBS that we are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our cherished team member, Simon Marlow.

Simon served globally with BFBS as both a radio host and producer, with his latest role being the Station Manager for BFBS Northern Ireland.

Following the recent demise of radio broadcaster Darren Scott, who lost his life after a prolonged struggle against stage four cancer last month.

61-year-old Darren sadly succumbed to a prolonged fight against advanced stage melanoma, as reported by South African radio station HOT 102.7FM in an official announcement.

Advanced (or metastatic) skin cancer, often referred to as malignant melanoma, occurs when the initial cancerous growth in the skin extends its reach to other locations within the body, including lymph nodes and internal organs.

Darren leaves behind his two sons Mark and Matthew, and many people, including family members and coworkers, have gathered to honor the committed and cherished radio personality.

In simpler terms, Sarah-Kate Accetta shared with East Coast Radio that they, along with their two sons, must adapt to living without him.

On our journey back home now, not just to remember him, but also to find a way to live on without him, I humbly request from the depths of my soul: could you please offer prayers for the boys.

In a way that’s never to be undone, their reality has been transformed. We must cling tightly to every ounce of resilience we possess. I eagerly look forward to brightening their days with joy and affection, sharing countless tales about their father that are heartfelt, thrilling, and etched forever in our memories.

Simon Parkinson, host of HOT 102.7FM Breakfast, commented: “I’ve never met a more committed radio professional than Darren.”
