Downton Abbey 3 Shocker: Lady Mary’s Divorce Revealed in New Trailer!

I’m still enjoying the sequels from 2025’s movie lineup, and there are at least two more on the horizon that I can’t wait for. One of those upcoming films is undoubtedly Downton Abbey: The Final Chapter, which hints at the end of an era at Julian Fellowes’ esteemed mansion.

A fresh trailer for the September release offers insight into why Matthew Goode won’t be appearing in Downton Abbey 3. To put it frankly and with utmost respect to the actor who is no longer part of the project, I believe this decision should have been made earlier.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale Sees Lady Mary Talbot As A Divorced Woman

As a die-hard Downton Abbey fan, I can’t help but notice that Lady Mary’s love life seems to be reaching its climax, or rather, “the grand finale.” With Focus Features unveiling the full trailer for the September 12th cinematic extravaganza, we’ve glimpsed Michelle Dockery being swept off her feet by none other than Joely Richardson from the Downton Abbey 3 cast. Announcing this news with a hushed secrecy that only a Downton drama calls for, the air in the room has turned decidedly somber.

Initially, we observe a return of Paul Giamatti as Harold Levinson, adding to the excitement. However, when we consider his significant role, it seems his personal affairs might bring distress to the Crawley family.

With Peacock TV, you can enjoy almost the entire Downton Abbey collection for as low as $7.99 per month or $79.99 annually. If you start today, you’ll have enough time to binge-watch all six seasons and the latest movie, Downton Abbey: A New Era. For a smoother viewing experience, consider upgrading to Peacock Premium’s ad-free tier for a more condensed timeline. Check it out here!

Contemplating the clarity we gain from a Peacock subscription regarding such antics, the ultimate outcome following this character’s return will set the Downton Abbey finale apart. In the interim, before we recover from Lady Mary Talbot’s surprising marital shift, we are invited to ponder The Grand Finale’s latest teaser trailer. Naturally, given the twists in the previous film, it remains to be seen just how much this revelation will surprise us.

This Really Should Have Happened In Downton Abbey: A New Era

It might seem blunt, but I believe that “Downton Abbey: A New Era” from 2022 could have benefited by revealing more about Lady Mary’s relationship with Jack Barber (Hugh Dancy). This isn’t just a case of “the benefit of hindsight,” as I had hoped for something more captivating to come from her flirtation. Some of you might be raising eyebrows, so let me share this clip from the second movie that supports my argument:

In terms of character development, Henry Talbot appears to be testing his limits within the world of Downton Abbey. After causing quite a stir with Mary in the last season, he’s persisted with his ventures in automobile trade and racing. Although it seems she’s accepting these pursuits in the scenes from A New Era, one can speculate that perhaps every week, Michelle Dockery’s character as the head of Downton household experiences some form of emotional turmoil or struggle.

Thinking persistently about the possibility of losing Henry, similar to how she lost her late husband Matthew, could drive anyone to distraction at the start. Given its immense emotional impact, even the resilient Crawleys might find this challenging – they are usually composed of sturdier material.

In the absence of Matthew Goode, the climactic reveal in Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale becomes even more intriguing, with the introduction of a potential new romantic interest played by Alessandro Nivola. As we wait for further insights into how the world of Downton has evolved by 1930, all we can do is stay attentive and eager for the unfolding events when the finale airs on September 12th.
