NASA’s next frontier: A Netflix streaming deal
Netflix currently hosts hit dramas such as “Squid Game,” films, and live boxing contests. The upcoming endeavor for this streaming platform: broadcasting live NASA rocket launches.
On Monday, the leading streaming platform announced they are partnering with an agency to bring space experiences directly to your living room. This will include live footage from the International Space Station showing views of Earth, along with expanding their extensive library towards live television.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that starting this summer, NASA content – featuring mesmerizing rocket launches, breath-taking astronaut space walks, and comprehensive mission coverage – will be gracing the screens of our favorite streaming platform based in Los Gatos, California. Buckle up for an out-of-this-world adventure!
In a statement, Rebecca Sirmons, as head of NASA, emphasized our responsibility under the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 to spread the tale of space exploration across a vast array of people. She expressed that we are united in striving for an era of groundbreaking innovation and exploration, inspiring future generations not only from their living rooms but also on their mobile devices.

Later this year, Netflix plans to establish two outlets in the Philadelphia and Dallas regions. They previously announced that another outlet will open in Las Vegas by 2027.
As a movie critic, I find that the content aligns seamlessly with the educational lineup of popular streaming platforms, such as documentaries and family-focused programs like “Sesame Street” and “Ms. Rachel.” It’s evident that children’s programming has become a burgeoning sector for Netflix, as it successfully challenges traditional broadcasters in this domain.
Previously, Netflix announced they had over 301 million subscribers. However, on a recent Monday, they revealed that their viewership has expanded to surpass 700 million individuals.
NASA’s resources, including their website and app, remain accessible and free to the public. For decades, space enthusiasts have been captivated by non-fiction programming about space exploration, be it through IMAX theater documentaries or the renowned NOVA series on public broadcasting.

As a devoted film enthusiast, I’ve often pondered about how to find my way to the iconic neighborhood of Sesame Street. For many years, it was a familiar face on HBO, but recently, it seemed to be searching for a new home.
