As a devoted admirer of “Detectorists”, I must prepare myself for a touch of disillusionment, for Toby Jones himself has confirmed that we won’t be blessed with another installment of our cherished comedy series.
In a recent interview, Jones, who acted in the series alongside its creator Mackenzie Crook, was asked about the potential return of the show following the 2022 Christmas special.
It appears that Jones felt quite confident they wouldn’t be able to surpass that finale, no matter how much they desired to do so.
After perhaps discovering the Holy Grail, there isn’t much else left to search for,” he stated in an interview with Deadline, alluding to the climactic scene in the 2022 documentary where metal detecting duo Andy and Lance finally uncovered their elusive treasure.
In simpler terms, Jones said, “Returning after that would be quite challenging, and it’s more characteristic of the British than Americans – yet, there’s a sense of value in leaving them eager for more.

Although Jones might not return to the character of Lance Stater, you’ll soon find him portraying Philip Burton in the upcoming Richard Burton biography titled “Mr Burton” and the ITV series “The Hack“, sharing screen time with David Tennant.
Drawing upon genuine occurrences, “The Hack” is a narrative that unfolds during the period spanning 2002 to 2012, focusing on the notorious phone hacking scandal involving journalists from the now-defunct tabloid newspaper, “News of the World“, which was owned by Rupert Murdoch.
In this production, Tennant takes on the role of Nick Davies, a true-life investigative journalist who exposed a significant scandal. Meanwhile, Jones embodies Alan Rusbridger, who was editor of The Guardian at that time. The central narrative will weave together with the murder of private detective Daniel Morgan.

The cast for this series has been finalized, featuring Robert Carlyle, Rose Leslie, Cara Theobold, Katherine Kelly, Lara Pulver, and others.
The Hack is co-written by Adolescence‘s screenwriter Jack Thorne and Annalisa Dinnella.
The Detectorists is streaming on BBC iPlayer.
The Hack will air on ITV and stream on ITVX.
