ITV’s “gripping” new British spy thriller with Endeavour’s Shaun Evans gets exciting update
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to announce that the cameras are now rolling on the ITV thriller series “Betrayal,” which brings together the talents of Shaun Evans, best known for his roles in “Endeavour” and “Vigil,” and Romola Garai, who captivated us in “Atonement.” The anticipation is palpable!
Under the label of an “exciting spy drama”, this series delves deep into the covert operations of MI5, tracking the life of the protagonist John Hughes portrayed by Evans, as both his work and private life become increasingly complex.
Slated for release in 2026, this series originates from the minds of director Julian Jarrold (of “A Very Royal Scandal”) and screenwriter David Eldridge. At present, it’s being actively produced in Manchester and Liverpool.

In the heart of my gaming world, I find myself embodying John Hughes, a seasoned MI5 operative struggling to keep up with an ever-evolving threat matrix while battling inner turmoil – a classic case of real-life gaming gone too real.
In a covert meeting, John’s interaction with the British-Iranian informant named Ehsan turns violent, leading to questions being raised about him by his superiors, among whom is Simone Grant, portrayed by Nikki Amuka-Bird.
As a devoted admirer, I find myself reflecting on an event that has undeniably cast a heavy burden upon my marital union with Claire Garai, a GP of exceptional caliber. The arrival of Mehreen Askari-Evans, an ambitious and seasoned operative from MI6, seems to have added yet another layer of strain to our already strained relationship, further testing the limits of our bond.
The series’ cast is completed with Gamba Cole from “The Outlaws”, Omid Djalili known for “His Dark Materials”, Matthew Tennyson who stars in “Grantchester”, Hayley Tamaddon of “Coronation Street”, and Anthony Flanagan, a star from “House of the Dragon”.
In addition to Paddy Rowan, Waj Ali, Karim Kadjar, Emma Cunniffe, Georgina Rylance, Ben Lambert, and Julian Wadham, the cast includes newcomers Elham Karimpour, Aidan Rivers, Corin Silva, and Eliza Agrosoaie.
When the series was unveiled in September, Evans expressed his joy at rejoining ITV for a “thoughtfully crafted and relevant production”.
Evans expressed his pleasure and honor to reconnect with David Eldridge, as they collaborate to vividly portray Eldridge’s thought-provoking perspective on the realm of espionage.
It’s truly delightful to work together again with the top-notch crew at Mammoth Screen. I can’t wait for everyone at ITV to experience it shortly.
Betrayal will premiere on ITV1, STV, ITVX, and STV Player in 2026.
