Great British Bake Off winner announces they are expecting their first child with adorable ultrasound snap as host Alison Hammond leads slew of congratulatory messages
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share the wonderful news that Matty Edgell, our beloved Great British Bake Off champion, has announced that he and his wife Lara are expecting their first child! This joyous revelation was made public on Monday.
In 2023, the series champion, aged 29, posted a touching Instagram photo featuring a onesie emblazoned with “Born in 2025” alongside an ultrasound and a small blanket marked “Little WHU fan.” This heartfelt tribute was a nod to Matty’s deep affection for West Ham United.
Titling the heartwarming picture, he expressed: “Can’t wait to greet you soon” accompanied by a white love heart symbol.
Matt’s supporters and co-stars from The Great British Bake Off quickly flooded the comment section with their well-wishes. Host Alison Hammond was among the first to express her congratulations, saying, “Congratulations! How thrilling!” in a cheerful manner.
During Matty’s show, Cristy Sharp (who placed fourth) excitedly exclaimed, “Matty, Lara!!! I’m overjoyed for both of you!! Wonderful news! ❤️❤️❤️”.
In a friendly manner, Nicky Laceby and Dana Conway, both graduates from Fellow series 14, hastily approached to congratulate their friend. Dana expressed her excitement by saying: ‘Oh my goodness, stop! Heartfelt congratulations, darlings, kisses xx’

Nicky exclaimed enthusiastically: “What fantastic news! Oh, how marvelous, my heartfelt congratulations to the two of you!
In simpler terms, the runner-up from Series 13, Sandro Farmhouse, said “Aww, congratulations ❤️”, and the runner-up from Season 15, Christiaan de Vries, responded with a series of heart-shaped emoticons.
What wonderful news! Congratulations!” while Andy commented: “Congratulations to both of you. That’s amazing!
After fans playfully speculated about Alison having a crush on Matty while he was in the tent, her charming remark followed. Many spectators even guessed that they might elope someday.
Expressing their thoughts about the couple’s connection on social media, they joked: “Alison and Matt are clearly smitten, and I can’t help but agree”; “Watching Alison pursue Matt is more captivating than any reality dating series we’ve seen before.
When the show features ‘What the contestants are currently doing’, I wish that Matty and Alison have eloped and started a bakery in the southern part of France instead.
Although everyone involved in the production playfully exchanged banter, one source commented: ‘During the recording earlier this year, we were aware that our chemistry would develop into something special.’
Matty emerged victorious in season 14 of the Channel 4 show, outperforming strong contestants like Dan Hunter and Josh Smalley.

Not long after the finale in November 2023, he revealed that he and his girlfriend Lara had become engaged just a few days prior.
After his victory was announced, The Great British Bake Off’s account posted a message celebrating Matty and Lara for their recent engagement.
‘Bake Off extends its warmest congratulations to Matty and Lara on their recent engagement!’
In his farewell interview, Matty disclosed that he’d popped the question to his cherished partner while vacationing in Sorrento, Italy. He went on to express that this moment was among the most joyful experiences of his life.
In the image, Lara proudly displayed her stunning, sparkling ring while receiving a warm embrace and a gentle kiss on the cheek from him.
In May the previous year, the pair exchanged vows in a heartfelt ceremony. At that time, Matty excitedly posted on Instagram: “Officially bound, there’s no going back!
On this extraordinary day that held such significance for us, I reveled in the joy of celebrating with those dear to my heart. A heartfelt thank you goes out to each one of you for gracing us with your presence. You all played a pivotal role in making our special day unforgettable. By the way, my wife never looked more radiant!
Previously, it was Lara who arranged for him to join the contest, a fact he acknowledged, revealing his initial doubt about his own abilities to participate in the show.

When vying for the competition, Matty often referred to himself as the “unofficial dark horse,” given that several of his peers had a greater amount of baking expertise compared to him, a skill he honed from his grandmother’s teachings.
Overwhelmed by my victory, I find myself at a loss for words! For years, folks have been urging me to try Bake Off, dismissing their suggestions as idle chatter. Little did I know that one day, I’d not only step onto that set but also take home the grand prize! It feels surreal, like a dream come true!
In a kind manner, he brought up Lara, saying, “Perhaps the Great British Baking Show could bring a small transformation to my life, yet teaching Physical Education is genuinely enjoyable for me right now.
One enjoyable memory from my life is spending time inside our tent, and another unforgettable moment was getting engaged in the beautiful town of Sorrento by my beloved partner, Lara.
I’m unsure about my future plans, but my upcoming grand baking endeavor is creating our wedding cake. For now, I’ll simply relish the process.
In his Instagram post following the finale, he expressed gratitude towards Lara, acknowledging that she might not have always enjoyed living with him and expressing appreciation for the many sacrifices she made on his behalf during those challenging times. He also mentioned that he probably didn’t prepare dinner for ten weeks.
As a die-hard enthusiast, I wish you could’ve shared the Great British Bake Off adventure with me, especially the thrilling parts! You were there for me through every twist and turn of my rollercoaster journey, lifting me up when I stumbled and cheering me on during triumphs. Your unwavering support gave me the courage to keep baking week after week, facing the highs and lows together.
Lara, if it weren’t for your intervention, none of my achievements would’ve been possible. Truly, I owe you a debt of gratitude for helping me out when you did.

Prior to his acting role, Matty had been employed as a Physical Education (PE) and science teacher at Hampton College, which is located in Cambridgeshire.
He shared that his pupils were amazed by his baking abilities as the contest aired on Channel 4, and he expressed his enthusiasm about potentially sharing the victory with him.
He shared with the broadcaster, “The students at school were quite taken aback by my appearance in the series, and I received some genuinely heartwarming compliments from them.
They might find it impressive that I’ve won, yet they’ll also be taken aback by it.
‘Throughout the series, they’ve supported me financially. Therefore, they’ll feel proud knowing they share this victory with me.’
Instead, Matty admitted that he had left his cherished teaching position the previous year to focus on his love for baking.
In an interview with BBC News back in July, he confessed that his final day was exceptionally emotional. However, he expressed feelings of both anxiety and excitement regarding the upcoming phase of his life. During this period, he intends to write a book, venture into television, and establish his own cake enterprise.
The Bake Off presented me with a chance to venture down a path I hadn’t considered before. Had I not seized this opportunity, I might have often wondered, ‘What if I had?’
