Gavin & Stacey star joins Oasis comedy based on ‘iconic music era’

Actor Matthew Horne, known from the show “Gavin & Stacey,” is set to appear in the upcoming comedy series titled “The Battle” which revolves around the well-known music battle between Oasis and Blur.

In this rendition, the play being discussed is penned by John Niven and led by Matthew Dunster. The production aims to portray the intense competition, famously known as the “Britpop War”, that unfolded between two prominent bands during the mid-90s. As each band reached their commercial zenith, this rivalry escalated.

In the popular BBC sitcom, Horne, who played Gavin Shipman, is set to step into the part of Andy Ross, a powerful figure in the music business. This character was unwittingly entangled in one of the most infamous disputes in the annals of the British music scene.

The actor expressed that the play perfectly captures his teenage cultural background, and he’ll be performing in it until May 30, 2026. He’s excited about delving into this renowned musical period on stage alongside an exceptionally gifted group of creators.

1995, London. On the same day, two prominent British music groups unveil their singles, marking the start of a fiery competition known as Britpop, as depicted in the upcoming play set to debut in Birmingham on February 11, 2026.

Tensions escalate, bonds break, and at the heart of it all is a frenzy that would shape an entire epoch – which side did you stand with: Blur or Oasis?

The story unfolds from the tumultuous backdrop of the Brit Awards to the well-known music battle, The Battle, a hysterically funny portrayal of one of rock’s most legendary feuds,” describes the synopsis for this production. It will showcase “iconic figures and unforgettable confrontations.

The Battle will tour across the UK from 11 February 2026 until 1 August.
