Pulp throws shade at Charli XCX as band makes surprise headline at Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage after 30 years

Pulp threw shade at Charli XCX during their surprise performance at Glastonbury tonight.

Legendary Britpop figures secretly performed under the enigma known as Patchwork, eventually unveiling their identities decades later on the iconic Pyramid Stage.

The band playfully criticized Charli XCX, who was set to headline the Other Stage on Saturday night, by announcing that the year 2025 would be known as “The Pulp Summer.

Before their performance, a screen flashed with ‘Are you ready for…. Pulp Summer.’

It appears that the band’s statement was specifically targeted at Charli’s followers, who proclaimed a ‘Brat Summer’ following her successful album release last year.

In a playful jest, as the band’s name appeared on the screen, I, as your lifestyle expert, would say, “Ah, we’re Pulp here! Apologies to those who were hoping for some Patchwork instead.

He added: ‘Did you know we were going to play? How? Psychic? Good.’

During their performance, Pulp playfully pointed out that it had been a span of thirty years and four days since they made their debut on the Glastonbury stage back in 1995.

The group disbanded in 2002, with Jarvis commenting soon after that there seemed to be little interest or enthusiasm left for their music.

They split again in 2013, before reforming in 2022.

I had the privilege of being part of the enthusiastic crowd who witnessed Charli XCX’s spectacular performance, reviving Brat Summer yet again, especially for us die-hard fans.

She said: ‘It’s summertime and I was thinking about last summer – did anyone have a Brat Summer?’

The performer kicked off her performance dressed head-to-toe in black, complete with sunglasses and tall boots, by performing the songs “360” and “Von Dutch”.

Apart from tunes from her latest record, she also sang hits like “Unlock It (Lock It)”, “Party 4 U”, “Vroom Vroom”, and “Speed Drive” – these tracks were featured in the film “Barbie”.

Later on, Charli sang her tune titled Apple, and it was Grace Abrams, the renowned viral dancer, who happened to be the daughter of Star Wars’ director J.J. Abrams, who was the one dancing.

Charli reached a major career milestone with the release of her sixth album last year.

Her song reached its greatest success, climbing up to third place on the Billboard Hot 100 and winning her a Grammy Award as well.

In a recent conversation, Charli shared that she won’t prioritize commercial success moving ahead.

She emphasized that preserving the ability to express herself creatively carries a greater significance for her compared to striving for high rankings on music charts.

At the Cannes International Film Festival, she shared: “I don’t feel compelled to produce another masterpiece like ‘Brat’, as when I was crafting it, though I wholeheartedly believed in its potential and knew exactly what I wanted to accomplish with it, I had no inkling about how it would be perceived.

She shared, “I was primarily creating it for my own purposes and presenting it in a manner that suited me, yet I didn’t realize how much people would resonate with it as they did.

Charli also hinted that her next album will take a completely different direction.

She said, ‘It’s impossible to repeat exactly the same action twice, and it’s likely that my upcoming album won’t be successful. But honestly, I’m okay with that.’

Thousands flocked to Worthy Farm as the 2025 Glastonbury Festival commenced on a Wednesday, and it seems that this year’s festival is poised to become one of the most memorable ones in history.

1975 took over as the headliners for the Pyramid Stage on Friday evening, marking their first time gracing the prestigious prime-time position.

Nevertheless, on Saturday, Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts performed at the Pyramid Stage, though the audience was relatively small, as they followed acts such as RAYE, Patchwork (who turned out to be Pulp), John Fogerty, The Script, Brandi Carlile, and Kaiser Chiefs.

On Sunday evening, pop star Olivia Rodrigo will bring some flair to the festival’s finale. Meanwhile, it’s Rod Stewart’s time to shine as he takes the stage for the first time ever on the cherished Sunday Legends spot at Glastonbury.

As a die-hard music enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement about the stellar lineup gracing the Other Stage this coming Sunday! Two of my all-time favorites, Wolf Alice and The Prodigy, will be taking center stage. Absolutely thrilling, isn’t it?

Attendees at the festival have been basking in sunlight, donning striking ensembles, boots caked with mud, and a constant soundtrack of music that embodies the unique charm of Glastonbury.

Looking forward to more astonishing events, notable attendees, and memories that will last a lifetime, Glastonbury 2025 promises to etch itself into the annals of the festival’s storied past.

The Glastonbury Festival 2025 spans over the period from Wednesday, June 25 to Sunday, June 29, offering a full five days of music, excitement, and high-profile acts on Worthy Farm.
