Sydney Sweeney’s Co-Star Reveals What It’s Really Like to Get Punched by Her on Set!
In a departure from her usual roles, Sydney Sweeney has stepped into the shoes of a pioneering boxer in an upcoming biopic about Christy Martin. This shows she’s not just ready to act, but also to fight. For this sports film, the actress underwent an intense physical makeover, bulking up by 30 pounds of muscle and immersing herself in the tough training regimen needed to portray one of the ’90s most famous fighters. Now, her co-star Katy O’Brian shares her experience of being hit several times by Sweeney during filming.
At the unveiling of the film Eddington, which Variety posted about, Katy O’Brian spoke candidly during a red carpet interview about the intense fight scenes she and Sydney Sweeney performed on set. O’Brian humorously discussed receiving blows from her on-screen adversary in a playful manner.
[I] endured several hard blows, indeed… It was quite enjoyable. Yes, I found it delightful. Exceptional, in fact. I hope it translates well on screen.

In the movie, the actress from “The Mandalorian,” known for her strong performances, takes on one of Martin’s adversaries. She didn’t seem to mind taking a few hits, but this raises a question about her experience when it came to hitting Sweeney, who had agreed to bulk up for her role. O’Brian openly shared that she wasn’t comfortable with striking her fellow actor, and her explanation is quite rational:
Even though she had gained an additional 30 pounds, I would have preferred if she had 20-30 more. Consequently, it doesn’t feel satisfying to me, yet it seems like she wasn’t too concerned about it.
In other words, O’Brian was understating things. Yet, when O’Brian voiced worries about potentially harming Sydney Sweeney during an intense scene, she dismissed his concern entirely. As O’Brian remembers,…
She was like, ‘If you break my nose, that’s fine.’
Without a doubt, that’s dedication to a character! The film, currently unnamed, recently completed its production in November, with David Michôd (known for “The King”) at the helm. He collaborated on the script with Mirrah Foulkes. This captivating tale centers around Christy Martin’s extraordinary boxing career, her trailblazing achievements in a male-dominated field, and the more troubling aspects of her personal story, such as surviving a nearly fatal assault by her former husband in 2010. Remarkably, Christy Martin was present on set during filming, an experience O’Brian found both “intimidating” and “awe-inspiring.
Previously, Sweeney has spoken openly about the impact her physical transformation had on her physique. In an interview with W magazine, she explained that her body underwent a significant change during the process. Sweeney described feeling astonished by the growth in her “butt” and “boobs,” which she found to be quite noticeable. Despite the surprising changes, she considered the experience to be incredibly empowering, leaving her with a newfound sense of strength.
Christy Martin’s impact is already etched in the documentary titled “Untold: Deal With the Devil“, which can be streamed with a Netflix subscription. Yet, Martin’s life story may acquire an additional depth through Sydney Sweeney’s portrayal, and if early accounts from the set like O’Brian’s are any clue, she has poured every ounce of her being into her boxing career.
