Need a weekend watch? Here’s 5 great movies on TV this weekend – including a “magnificent” spy thriller

At last, it’s the weekend! You’re in for a delightful surprise since plenty of excellent movies will be airing on your TV screens.

Over the weekend, I’m really looking forward to revisiting a timeless Alfred Hitchcock thriller, catching one of Daniel Craig’s top-notch Bond films, and enjoying a contemporary Disney masterpiece.

So settle in, grab the popcorn, and take a look at what’s in store on the BBC, ITV and Channel 4.

What to Read Next

Casino Royale

Without a doubt, many consider the 2006 film to be one of Craig’s finest performances as James Bond, marking his initial appearance in the iconic tuxedo.

As a secret agent, I found myself being promoted to 00 status, which meant taking on a crucial mission: outwitting the villain Le Chiffre in a high-stakes poker game to leave him bankrupt. But things took an unexpected turn when I crossed paths with Vesper Lynd, who swept me off my feet and turned this operation into something more meaningful than just a game.

The magazine, New Statesman, referred to Casino Royale as the most authentic and hard-hitting installment of the series. Meanwhile, Time Out expressed that Daniel Craig is “the best Bond in the entire franchise’s history” according to Rotten Tomatoes. You have the opportunity to make your own assessment when it airs tonight.

Airing Saturday on ITV1 at 8pm. Available on ITVX afterwards.

Glory

Starring an Academy Award-winning portrayal by Denzel Washington, the film “Glory” unfolds against the backdrop of the American Civil War, focusing on the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment – a pioneering unit within the Union Army composed of African American soldiers.

Additionally featuring Matthew Broderick from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Morgan Freeman of Now You See Me, and Cary Elwes known for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, this film garnered an additional two Oscars and received widespread praise. Rotten Tomatoes hailed it as “one of the greatest Civil War films ever created”.

Airing Sunday morning on Channel 4 at 12.40am. Available on Channel 4 afterwards.

North by Northwest

In 1959, the suspenseful film produced by Alfred Hitchcock was praised as “magnificent” by The Daily Telegraph, and is widely considered among the all-time best films ever created.

The movie centers around a New York advertising professional, who, due to an error, is believed to be a foreign agent. In this role, we find Cary Grant, along with Eva Marie Saint and James Mason.

The scene is adorned with several memorable moments, such as the chase sequence where Grant runs through a cornfield pursued by an airplane, and his journey across Mount Rushmore.

Airing Sunday on BBC Two at 1.50pm. Available on BBC iPlayer afterwards.

Moana

Over nine years since its debut, this contemporary Disney masterpiece continues to be an unstoppable hit, with a blockbuster sequel and a live-action adaptation in the pipeline. But if you haven’t seen the original yet, it will be broadcast this coming weekend.

In this film, we follow the story of Moana, a young girl from a coastal village, who is chosen by the sea to restore a sacred artifact to the divine figure Te Fiti, the earth goddess.

In this rephrased version: Boasting the vocal performances of Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho, Moana leaves you singing its tunes even after the movie ends, thanks to the memorable music created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina.

Airing Sunday on BBC One at 3.15pm. Available on BBC iPlayer afterwards.

Past Lives

In the year 2023, Past Lives garnered immense praise upon its release. It was hailed as a “masterful demonstration of slow, lingering storytelling” that would likely “linger with you, perhaps even into your future existence” by Empire.

In her first directorial venture, Celine Song’s film traces the journey of two long-separated friends, Nora Moon (played by Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), who were once inseparable. The story picks up more than a decade after Nora and her family moved from South Korea to the United States, with their paths crossing again after another twelve years have passed.

The film garnered nominations for two Oscars, one each for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay (for the movie “Materialists”), with its release scheduled in the UK for August.

Airing Sunday on BBC Two at 10pm. Available on BBC iPlayer afterwards.

The first printed edition of Digital Spy’s magazine, titled “British Comedy Legends,” is available for purchase! You can find it at your local newsstand or buy it online, currently selling for only £3.99.
