Brandy and Monica reveal who inspired their hit song The Boy Is Mine

25 years on, I, as a lifestyle aficionado, share the captivating story that sparked my iconic duet, “The Boy Is Mine,” with my dear friend Brandy. This journey down memory lane unveils the passion and creativity that fueled our collaboration back then.

After revealing plans for their shared concert tour with the same title as their award-winning collaboration (which earned them a Grammy shortly after its debut over three decades ago), the duo took time to ponder back on their successful joint project.

On the Wednesday edition of The Tonight Show hosted by Jimmy Fallon, they (the duo) talked about creating their 1998 hit song during their joint appearance.

During a late-night chat, the show’s host inquired whether Brandy, aged 46, had indeed drawn inspiration for her idea from observing The Jerry Springer Show.

She acknowledged it and elaborated, “Indeed, I was an ardent Jerry Springer viewer, and one of the episodes discussed ‘The boy is mine.’ That sparked an idea for a song in me. Let’s give it a try.

Following her inspiration, Brandy expressed that she felt compelled to collaborate with Monica, aged 44, on the song – this collaboration being the very motivation behind the song of the same name featured in Ariana Grande’s recent album, ‘Eternal Sunshine’.

She often admired her work and hoped for a chance to collaborate. So, I reached out and invited her to join me on a song, which she graciously accepted. This is where we find ourselves now.

When they began collaborating, Monica expressed that she had suggested to Brandy that their relationship might be misunderstood as a rivalry due to the themes in the song.

‘That was the point,’ Brandy then added.

The Jerry Springer Show made an appearance in the short clip that accompanied the popular duet by Brandy and Monica.

In the opening scene of the video, you’ll find Brandy tuned into the daytime talk show which aired from 1991 to 2018.

Then, Monica is seen changing the channel.

When Brandy changes it back, the two squabble over the TV right before the song starts.

The tune quickly became popular, stayed number one on the Billboard charts for 13 consecutive weeks, and also earned the musical pair a Grammy award.

Many years later, the pair released another duet titled It All Belongs to Me in 2012.

After releasing their second duet, the pair were rumoed to be in a longstanding feud.

When Ariana Grande invited them to collaborate on her remix, they accepted and acknowledged the pop star for bringing them back together and mending the rift between them.

Previously, Brandy and Monica received their thirteenth and fifth Grammy nomination last year, thanks to their collaborations on Grande’s version of The Boy Is Mine remix.

Over the scorching hot summer last year, Monica shared with me her thoughts on our latest collaboration, saying it “bridged many divides.” As an ardent fan, I couldn’t agree more! It was truly magical how our efforts came together to fill in those empty spaces and bring harmony to the creative process.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: “I often find that when we communicate effectively, we don’t just solve problems, but uncover instances where the issue wasn’t a problem at all – merely a miscommunication. It’s amazing how much smoother things become once we open up the lines of dialogue.

This week saw the first-time collaboration on a tour by iconic R&B artists, marking over two and a half decades since they released “The Boy Is Mine.

The duo is set for a 24-city concert tour featuring special guests Kelly Rowland, Muni Long, and Jamal Roberts from American Idol as the opening acts.

Their tour will kick off on October 16 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The duo plans to put on shows in various U.S. cities, concluding their American tour in Houston, Texas on December 7.
