Cotswolds power list revealed by society snitches: The ultimate knives-out guide

It’s clear now, as evidenced by Beyonce and Jay Z house-hunting in the Cotswolds, that this area is no longer just a retreat for wealthy investors and rare livestock breeders – it has become an attractive destination for global power players looking to establish permanent residences.

In a remarkable change, the charming landscape of the Cotswolds now houses high-profile figures such as A-list celebrities, media tycoons, and prominent Hollywood personalities. Although the narrow roads remain winding, and the stone walls retain their honey-colored hue, these days they conceal vineyards and rewilded tennis courts behind grand gates.

Just a few weeks ago, it became crystal clear to me – perhaps more so than ever before – how this region reigns supreme in social circles. This became evident with the successive events that took place: first, there was the Soho Summit, an elegant assembly at Soho Farmhouse. Here, photogenic creatives, founders, and fashion enthusiasts gathered around fireside discussions and networking opportunities, all while enjoying Negronis.

Just a short distance away was where David Beckham kicked off the itinerary for his 50th birthday PR journey, taking place at his pristine Chipping Norton manor. When David initially settled in Great Tew over a decade back, he requested Soho Farmhouse to embellish the property as Victoria hesitated to embrace country living. However, after several years have passed, she has grown fond of the Cotswolds, indicating that it’s no longer the serene countryside retreat of yesteryears but rather a modern-day Notting Hill, complete with livestock.

When you might have thought the social life in town couldn’t get any more refined, here comes the influence of reality TV. As The Mail on Sunday revealed in April, Charlbury will serve as the setting for an upscale new show focusing on the lives of Cotswold wives – with society writer Plum Sykes and Gabriela Peacock, the wellness expert preferred by Princess Beatrice, among the stars.

Intrigued and thrilled as a fervent admirer, let me unveil to you an exclusive insider’s guide: The Cotswolds Social Power List – the crème de la crème of the countryside elite! From royal figures to finance titans cloaked in hedge-fund aristocracy; centuries-old land barons to trendy culinary tycoons, get acquainted with the influential personalities who rule Britain’s most aspiring postal code.

THE A-LIST

In the vicinity of neatly trimmed shrubs and houses painted like butter, certain names remain prominently visible. David and Victoria Beckham, who initially moved here accompanied by a bustling media entourage, have gradually become an integral part of the local scene – though they’ve added a touch of luxury to the traditional furniture. Their property, equipped with a football field and helipad, is a well-known feature near Soho Farmhouse, and their presence has played a significant role in shaping this region as one of the most glamorous corners of British countryside.

Calvin Harris, along with his broadcasting spouse Vick Hope, are planning to shift into their expansive new estate in the Cotswolds this summer, coinciding with the arrival of their first child. Over a span of five years, they have rebuilt a house that originally cost £3.6million. To ensure privacy, Calvin has recently installed one-way privacy glass, as a nearby bus route allows passengers to peek inside. As one resident puts it, ‘They aim for low-key living, but a mirrored mansion is hard to overlook.’ With an estimated net worth of £250 million, the DJ is also reportedly owning two adjacent properties and is considering buying a third, increasing his local investment to approximately £15 million.

Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi, both known figures, have just purchased a £15million mansion as an escape from the challenges of life in Trump’s America. According to insiders, they are thriving in their new surroundings and have even joined the £3,700-a-year Estelle Manor community. It seems Ellen particularly enjoys playing padel on their private courts.

Beyond doubt, there’s Lady Carole Bamford, often referred to as the ‘Queen of the Cotswolds’, who presides over the flourishing Daylesford Organic business. This establishment, characterized by its serene white decor, holistic therapies, and top-notch, carefully selected produce, has become a beacon for residents from all social circles.

Anthony Bamford’s wife is a highly respected individual known for speaking her mind straightforwardly. In an unusual public statement earlier this year, she criticized the Duchess of Sussex as ‘unconventional’ for releasing a Netflix series about home life without having done the necessary ‘grunt work.’ These comments sparked conversation far beyond Gloucestershire and highlighted a determination that those close to her have long recognized.

THE B-LIST

In the latest season of Clarkson’s Farm on Amazon, Jeremy Clarkson finds himself in the Cotswolds, hoping to rise in social circles. However, his farm Diddly Squat hasn’t won over the locals as much as he might have hoped. The ongoing disagreements between him and Oxfordshire council over building a restaurant and parking area have turned into an ongoing saga within the local community life.

Located near Chipping Norton, the former car enthusiast’s new venture into farming frequently attracts crowds – a point of contention among locals – who come for beers, farm products, and maybe even a sighting of the man.

Simon Cowell and his partner, Lauren Silverman, prefer a private life when residing in their countryside home, which they share with dogs, practicing yoga, and clay pigeon shooting. Their rural sanctuary also hosts visits from fellow judge Bruno Tonioli, often seen strolling the lanes with their son Eric. The family shares a neighborhood with the Beckhams but maintains a secluded lifestyle; as Lauren puts it, “We tend to keep to ourselves.

In a change of pace, Kate Moss – previously known for ruling London’s nightlife scene – has taken on a new role as a rural protector in this area. At 51 years old and having left the capital in 2022, she recently enlisted a planning consultant to vigorously oppose a neighbor’s proposed ‘garden room’, bringing up various concerns such as policy violations and potential damage to local trees. A local resident remarked, “She’s quite defensive about the scenery.” Adding, “And it seems, her bathroom view as well.

Always known for her diplomatic demeanor, film producer Jemima Khan, aged 51, continues to be well-respected among locals and visiting VIPs. However, behind closed doors, she’s a subject of much curiosity. ‘She’s had no shortage of charming suitors throughout the years,’ shares a friend. ‘We often play a guessing game trying to figure out who her next companion might be.’ Previously married to the currently incarcerated former prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, Jemima has also been romantically linked to Peter Morgan, the controversial comedian Russell Brand, and PR executive Matthew Freud.

As for Freud, who was once married to Rupert Murdoch’s daughter, he’s currently managing his PR endeavors from his base close to Burford following a move out of their shared £24million residence with Elisabeth Murdoch. Media moguls, power brokers in politics, and artists often grace Freud’s social events. It’s not the interior design or cuisine that attracts them; instead, it’s the star-studded guest list that truly captivates. Hollywood heavyweight Woody Harrelson is among those who regularly attend these gatherings.

As a die-hard fan, let me share my perspective: I’m utterly smitten with James Blunt, the melodious minstrel residing in an estate near the enchanting Andoversford. You’ll often find him at the Wheatsheaf Inn in Northleach, where he’s cherished for his down-to-earth demeanor and lack of pretension. Beyond Gloucestershire, he also owns properties in Ibiza and Verbier, yet it’s this humble Cotswolds abode that remains his most modest stronghold. His unique blend of worldwide acclaim and local camaraderie cements him as a B-list celebrity par excellence.

In 2021, Princess Beatrice and her husband, real estate developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, acquired a £3.5million farmhouse in this location, boasting six bedrooms, a guesthouse, a swimming pool, and a six-foot high security fence. As shared by a friend, she appreciates raising her family here, away from the limelight. She often socializes with Hollywood celebrities at the exclusive Estelle Manor.

THE C-LIST

In the social order of the enchanting Cotswolds, I find myself observing that His Majesty King Charles III holds a more casual position, often categorized as the C-list. This isn’t due to any deficiency in his royal lineage, but rather because he tends to keep a low profile and avoids actively participating in the visible rituals of local society. You won’t find him browsing at farm shops or gracing champagne-drenched soirees. Instead, Highgrove, his private abode nestled near Tetbury, serves as a sanctuary rather than a social hub – a testament to his lifelong commitment to the environment. Here, wildflower meadows bloom, organic kitchen gardens thrive, and an arboretum meticulously cultivated under his watchful gaze stands tall, embodying his passion for sustainability.

Princess Anne maintains an authentic, rural style of royalty at Gatcombe Park, her private farm and equestrian center in Gloucestershire. This venue hosts horse trials that attract competitors from various parts of the country, and it’s evident that there’s nothing pretentious about the Princess Royal’s presence here. She is unpretentious, often self-driving to events, and prefers casual tweeds over formal attire. In a region saturated with affected rusticity, Anne’s practical, muddy-booted approach sets her apart as the genuine article.

Just a short distance away, Zara Phillips (daughter) and Mike Tindall (husband), both renowned figures, enjoy strong bonds with the community. The Olympic equestrian medalist and ex-England rugby player are frequently seen dining at the Jolly Nice Farmshop, close to their Gatcombe Park manor. As a local puts it, “They effortlessly fit into the community lifestyle and are highly regarded.” It’s worth noting that not all royals living here can claim such positive sentiment.

James Dyson is not one for extravagance, and his influence at Dodington Park in the Cotswolds mirrors this practical simplicity. The billionaire inventor, known for his cyclonic vacuum empire which made him one of Britain’s wealthiest men, operates from a 300-acre Georgian estate in Gloucestershire. With its well-maintained structures, formal gardens, and private airfield, the property runs with the efficiency characteristic of someone who has amassed a fortune based on functionality. He tends to keep out of the spotlight.

Lord William Vestey, in a humble role, oversees the 6,000-acre Stowell Park estate – one of the most prestigious private properties in the locality. This is unadulterated wealth at its best: a Palladian mansion, vast parklands, and a lineage that has served kings and queens for centuries. It’s rumored that Prince William frequently visits, while Prince Harry resided there during his gap year. As expected of the Vesteys, they prefer to keep out of the spotlight. Yet, in the dance of rural high society, their name remains highly influential.

Known for her biting social satire, author and ex-Vogue journalist Plum Sykes is causing quite a stir among the local community. Her upcoming reality show, similar to The Real Housewives of Cheshire, set in the refined town of Charlbury, has sparked more than just interest. ‘Some people think it’s amazing,’ shares one resident, while others view it as a serious breach of trust.

Originally holding significant national power, David and Samantha Cameron now find themselves on a slightly lower social tier – not quite as influential as the average backbencher, but still notable by Cotswolds standards. Even though his time in Number 10 has passed, Cameron remains a familiar face in Chipping Norton, where he and Samantha have maintained a residence for a long time. Despite this change, their impact is still felt.

In my line of work, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing some remarkable social circles. Among them, there was a distinctive group that left an indelible mark – the ‘Chipping Norton set.’ This vibrant mix of influential politicians, media personalities, and high-society figures once held significant sway. Although their influence has faded over time, they were indeed notorious in their heyday.

Samantha has gradually built up her fashion label Cefinn, making it a well-respected brand. These days, the Camerons prefer to keep a lower profile, but they’re still known for hosting the occasional extravagant lunch and maintaining their presence in the local social scene. They might not be as newsworthy, but they certainly haven’t lost their significance.

THE D-LIST

At a slightly lower level, yet equally fascinating, are the individuals operating behind the scenes. David Linley, Earl of Snowdon, who is both a skilled furniture designer and the son of the late Princess Margaret, is renowned for his exceptional artistry and unwavering discretion. Linley is not only creatively accomplished but also boasts royal connections; he is someone you notice, yet he shuns the limelight. His life in the Cotswolds is modest, but his influence is significant.

Richard Dawkins, well-known worldwide, is considered a lesser figure within our social circle due to his limited involvement with it. This prominent evolutionary biologist resides at Over Norton Park, a spacious 210-acre property that echoes the tranquility of an Oxford quad, but with superior vistas and fewer academic obligations. Instead of frequenting farm shops for rose wine, Dawkins is usually engaged in discussions about science and secularism. Placed on the intellectual periphery, he seldom interacts with local communities and appears quite content to watch the Cotswolds continue without him – a solitary intellect amidst a sea of socialites.

Although the Cotswolds might seem like a retreat for British royals, it doesn’t belong exclusively to them. In fact, in 2021, the King of Bahrain, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, purchased Glympton Park – a vast, 2,000-acre estate situated close to Woodstock – for an impressive £120million. Historically, this estate was home to the English nobility, but now serves as a highly private retreat for the Gulf monarch. He underwent training at Sandhurst in the 1960s and has maintained connections with the British royal family for many years. Last year, he even had an official audience with the late Queen at Buckingham Palace and was knighted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle as an honorary Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.

At social gatherings, the name Nigel Oakes often elicits a curious glance, as he resides at the prestigious Whichford House. An alumnus of Eton College and the founder of SCL Group, which encompasses Cambridge Analytica, Nigel found himself at the epicenter of a worldwide data controversy, sparking inquiry not only in Westminster but also in Washington. Nowadays, he attempts to maintain a more discreet presence within the impressive gates of his estate in Warwickshire.

Sharan and Eiesha Pasricha, the dynamic duo responsible for Estelle Manor and Ennismore hospitality group, have given a fresh perspective to what a country hotel represents. Their 60-acre property has transformed into an exclusive sanctuary for the stylish elite, featuring a spa, rooftop pool, and décor reminiscent of a Bond villain’s hideout. Previously known for their work with The Hoxton hotel chain, Sharan has applied the same refined elegance to the Oxfordshire countryside, while Eiesha’s fashion-oriented flair influences aspects ranging from the flower arrangements to the spa treatments menu.

In Charlbury, restaurant owner Phil Winser is subtly transforming the local dining experience, reflective of his refined background in New York City. As a co-founder of The Fat Radish in Manhattan, Winser brought his English countryside dreams back home, using his keen eye for ambiance and intuition about what the sophisticated Soho crowd seeks from a weekend getaway.

In my role as a dedicated follower, I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing the transformation of The Bull – once a 16th-century coaching inn, now reborn as a farm-to-table retreat – into a minor pilgrimage destination for west Londoners such as Jack Whitehall. We flock here in search of open fires, natural wine, and unpretentious yet exquisitely executed cuisine. The secret to Winser’s success lies in the details: roast lamb served under the gentle glow of flickering candlelight, live music on Sunday afternoons, and an atmosphere that perfectly encapsulates what a modern country inn should feel like – a true haven.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I must say that Sudeley Castle is indeed a Tudor masterpiece, but what truly keeps it vibrant on the social scene are the remarkable individuals who call it home. Lady Ashcombe, an American-born aristocrat, has been a pillar of Cotswolds high society for quite some time, skillfully managing the estate with a blend of subtle leadership and transatlantic panache. Her daughter, Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst, a seasoned figure in the art world who’s graced establishments like Pace Gallery and Gagosian, made her way back from London to lend her creative touch and transform the castle into a cultural epicenter.

… and the ‘Notswolds’

Beyond the unseen border of the Cotswolds, there resides a cluster of well-known individuals who opted for tranquility over location specificity. They inhabit the ‘Notswolds’, adjacent counties such as Wiltshire and Somerset, which are far enough to be considered beyond the genuine Cotswolds territory.

In the town of Notswolds and some surrounding areas, you’ll find fewer influential figures and it hasn’t undergone significant gentrification yet. However, as Plum Sykes, author of Wives Like Us, shared with me upon my recent relocation, ‘Hereford is stunning, and you made a wise decision to move towards the west!’

In the picturesque region of Herefordshire, Elizabeth Hurley often tends to her idyllic piece of land. Meanwhile, Richard Hammond, a former host of Top Gear, dwells in a grand, dramatic fashion – in a 15th-century estate complete with turrets and a moat. BBC Radio 1 broadcaster Jo Whiley and Monty Don from Gardeners’ World are also residents here. Notably, Monty Don’s Longmeadow garden has gained significant national recognition.

Additionally, the Vaughans, Johnny and Georgina, reside in tranquil Herefordshire – he, a once-aristocratic soldier turned gentleman, while she’s a well-connected staple of high society. Their quiet relocation from London was so skillfully carried out that not even their old friend, Prince Harry, could keep pace with it. When he unexpectedly showed up at their previous Chelsea residence last week, he found himself face to face with puzzled new residents instead.

In the eastern region, Northamptonshire is becoming increasingly popular as a fashionable choice. Model and equestrian Edie Campbell, along with her architect mother Sophie Hicks, have crafted a stunning residence. Additionally, William Cash and milliner Lady Laura Cathcart add an additional layer of social prestige to the area.
