Chicago P.D. Weddings Ranked: Did Burzek’s Big Day Disappoint Fans?
In the TV world of One Chicago on NBC, the spring seasons usually conclude with nail-biting life-or-death cliffhangers. However, the finales in the 2025 schedule were less about immediate peril (though Hannah’s predicament on Chicago Med could be seen as an exception). The 12th season of Chicago P.D. culminated in Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek’s long-anticipated wedding, a moment I personally appreciated because they managed to exchange vows without any last-minute crises dampening the joyous atmosphere.
As a whole, the fanbase wasn’t in agreement about the wedding event, and I now empathize with those viewers who felt frustrated. During NBC’s summer reruns on Wednesday evenings, I’ve found myself tuning in, and given my preoccupation with Burzek, I couldn’t help but revisit past Chicago P.D. weddings for comparison purposes.
Why Chicago P.D. Fans Didn’t All Love The Burzek Wedding
To start off, it’s important to note that Burgess and Ruzek have a relationship on Chicago P.D. that has lasted the longest among the main characters, and possibly even across all shows in the One Chicago series. As a result, there was a lot of excitement leading up to their wedding, considering the hurdles they had to overcome individually and together before reaching their vow exchange.
In the end, neither character said “I do,” instead, the wedding scene was more about Chapman’s dialogue with Voight in the pews compared to the bride and groom. Showrunner Gwen Sigan explained that the idea of including vows started to feel too sentimental for the tone they aimed for in the finale, given the high stakes they had established. (You can watch the finale now with a Peacock subscription.)
In essence, there was no pre-written or filmed scene of Burzek’s heartfelt vow exchange in One Chicago, which brought together all their friends and relatives – a gathering that could be assembled by P.D. The upcoming NBC finales had instilled apprehension in some viewers due to the fear of impending doom and destruction. However, others may have held higher expectations from the beginning. The enthusiasm displayed by Marina Squerciati while choosing her wedding dress certainly fueled the anticipation among fans!
- luvtiva: “We deserved more than what we got. No vows, I do’s, rings and the first kiss ☹️. Burzek deserved more.”
- mrst_mama2a: “Was that really it for the wedding?! They better pic that back up. This beautiful couple deserves more QT and Burzek fans deserve vows after all they have been through. AND a Kevin best man speech. Please tell me there will be more.”
- gem61719: “Sigh….that was about Voight and Chapman, not Kim and Adam. After all their history, the characters and fans deserved more. Here’s hoping we get it in the season opener next season!! Gorgeous dress!!”
It appears that there isn’t a unanimous opinion among fans about whether Burzek received the ideal wedding, but many share the same critique: it felt underwhelming, and the finale didn’t have to end with Voight and Chapman. As Chicago P.D. often has fewer happy moments during its later seasons, the wedding wasn’t as celebratory as one might expect.
So let’s look back at an event that was definitely a celebration!

Mouch And Platt Get Married
Although the wedding for a PD character was primarily focused on Firehouse 51 characters in the series Chicago Fire, I’m including it for comparison purposes. Here are two reasons why: Firstly, there aren’t many weddings to revisit in PD, and secondly, it’s heartwarming to remember Platt looking so content while tying the knot with Mouch from the Fire department. If you’d like to reminisce about this special moment, you can find it in Episode 18 of Season 4 on Peacock.
As the wedding approached, it was filled with antics more fitting for a show like Fire, unlike in the crime drama where such scenes would be out of place. However, upon revisiting the episode, I recalled something crucial – the couple’s vows were never shown. Mouch and Platt appeared delighted, but the scene then transitioned to the reception at Molly’s. Despite their happiness, there was no exchange of “I do.
Reflecting on that emotional rerun, it’s not just the sentiment that drew me in, but the return of beloved characters such as Otis, Dawson, and Casey in Season 4 of “Fire.” It was truly heartening to reconnect with them once more. And speaking of milestone moments, I believe their wedding in PD ranks higher on the celebratory scale compared to Burzek’s nuptials.
However, there’s another significant event that undeniably resembles a “Chicago P.D.” wedding without the participation of “Chicago Fire,” and this leads me to…

Halstead And Upton Elope
Over the years, I’ve been an avid reader of TopMob’s coverage on Chicago P.D., and my affection for the Upstead pairing has been evident. I’d held onto hope for a satisfying resolution after Halstead’s departure in Season 10, but before fans could grapple with Jay leaving CPD, re-enlisting in the army, and then disappearing without a trace, and before Upton was emotionally drained by the abandonment, we witnessed the partners eloping at the courthouse. (This was Episode 9 of Season 9, if you wish to revisit it.)
Despite Upton finding some form of happiness in her post-Chicago life during Season 11, revisiting their midseason finale wedding from Season 9 still felt a tad melancholic since it was so full of optimism. Back then, we didn’t know the couple wouldn’t last long together. Yet, I did watch that wedding scene again!
Among the three PD couples, their wedding was under the most somber circumstances due to Halstead finding a way to keep the FBI off Upton’s case without incriminating Voight, causing them significant turmoil throughout the storyline. Interestingly, these two lovebirds are the only ones of the three PD weddings who actually exchanged vows on screen!
Among the three couples portrayed, only one (Jesse Lee Soffer and Tracy Spiridakos from Chicago P.D.) was shown consummating their marriage on screen. At the time, they shared wedding-related decisions with TopMob. Interestingly, this is the sole married couple depicted on the show who eventually divorced, a fact that I regret to mention even now.

How The Crime Drama’s Weddings Measure Up
After watching all three Chicago P.D. weddings one after another, I encountered an unexpected challenge in ranking them based on my personal satisfaction. In my opinion, the Upstead wedding with its courthouse vows takes the number one spot, followed by Burzek and then Platt/Mouch. Although Burzek’s wedding didn’t deliver the fireworks some fans anticipated, the actors effectively conveyed the profound significance of their characters finally exchanging vows.
In my opinion, the wedding that offered the most heartwarming payoff goes to Burzek, due to their lengthy and challenging path towards family formation. I’d rank Upstead second and Platt/Mouch third mainly because I found myself more invested in Upton and Halstead’s will-they-won’t-they dynamic compared to Mouch and Trudy’s romance that spanned across different shows.
It’s yet to be determined how Police District character P.D. will manage Burgess and Ruzek’s work dynamic, given their recent marital union. Given its focus on police procedures, it wouldn’t shock me if the series primarily ignores the marriage in episodes that don’t center around either of these characters, only occasionally showing wedding rings as visual cues.
As a huge fan, I can’t wait to see when Chicago P.D. graces our screens again on NBC Wednesday this fall, continuing its thrilling journey in the 10 pm time slot. Following closely behind at 9 pm ET will be Chicago Fire Season 14, and Chicago Med at 8 pm ET. If you can’t wait like I do, you can catch all three shows streaming now on Peacock!
