Guess who! Shock footage emerges of MAFS star’s punk rock past

The contestant from Married At First Sight gained notoriety as a villain during his season due to a scandalous affair.

After stirring up debate with his edit on the 2017 show, he subsequently made an appearance on a different reality program, Dancing with the Stars.

On the Channel Seven series, his run proved brief as he was dismissed in the initial round, following an underwhelming Mad Max-themed tango performance that failed to impress.

Currently, this individual is promoting himself as an inventor of Married at First Sight and an advocate for practical thinking on Instagram, where he has amassed a following of 84,000 people.

Despite not finding love during his stint on Channel Nine’s reality show, he later found love with a fellow reality TV personality. They announced their engagement in 2023.

Before my world turned into a whirlwind of reality show stardom, I was pounding the stages with my heart-pounding punk rock band, a fact recently unearthed by some long-lost videos.

But can you guess who it is?

That’s right! It’s none other than Dean Wells. 

During my adolescent years, I had the privilege of being part of the vibrant Newcastle scene as the bassist for the band Disengage.

In addition to other locations, it seems the band enjoyed significant popularity in their hometown of Newcastle as well. The video, filmed at the now-closed Islington Park Bowling Club, depicts a bustling crowd of local punk enthusiasts vigorously headbanging and dancing wildly to their energetic music.

Additionally, he appeared quite different from the Dean Wells fans were familiar with on reality TV, sporting a wild, unkempt hairstyle and a slimmer physique compared to his 2025 self.

In the early ’90s, Dean was a frequent presence at punk clubs in Newcastle, performing with a group that gained a considerable fan base.

In addition to composing their own tunes, such as “Rust,” this band also adapted tracks from Sepultura, a Brazilian heavy metal group, and Ringworm, a punk rock band based in Cleveland, Ohio.

The group drew significant inspiration from the hard-hitting punk rock band based in Washington D.C., Minor Threat, whose lead singer, Ian MacKaye, played a pioneering role in promoting the straight edge culture within punk music.

The straight edge lifestyle is a movement within the hardcore punk scene where followers choose to avoid using drugs, smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol, and engaging in casual or promiscuous sexual activity.

Funny enough, I found myself at the center of quite a buzz while appearing on the show, thanks to my romantic entanglement with fellow cast member, Davina Rankin. Little did I know, this would cause quite a stir and disappointment for my partner, Tracey Jewell.

In the year 2018, Dean shared pictures of his old punk rock band with fans, posting them on Instagram.

One photo showed Dean looking studiously at his fret-board as he belted out a number. 

One individual crouched over his musical instrument while serving as the band’s leader, all while donning McDonald’s trousers. Meanwhile, another figure, embodying the spirit of punk rock, jumped exuberantly and passionately, shedding his anger and freedom into the air.

1. During the performance, he was shown interacting with the band’s guitarist on stage, and another instance spotlighted Dean playing bass for Orange County, California punks Ignite on stage.

2. In one scene, he was in the midst of a mosh pit with the band’s guitarist on stage, while in another, Dean stood in for Ignite from Orange County, California as their bassist on stage.

3. He could be seen jamming with the band’s guitarist on stage in one instance, and in another, he was filling in for Ignite, a punk group from Orange County, California, playing bass during their performance.

4. One moment showed him engaging with the band’s guitarist on stage amidst a mosh pit, while another highlighted Dean taking over as bassist for Ignite, an OC punk band.

5. In one segment, he was in the thick of it with the band’s guitarist on stage during a performance, and in another, Dean stepped in for Ignite from Orange County, California as their bass player on stage.

Dean, who briefly dabbled in hip hop using the alias MC Visionz, shared heartfelt recollections as he gazed upon the memories.

Dean shared some photos of him from his days with the socio-politically charged, fast-paced punk/rock band Disengage in Newcastle. The band was known for its focus on social and political issues.

He went on to say, “We’d always have the wildest concerts! I truly miss those days. Back then, before I became a rapper,” followed by the hashtags #punkrock, #sjw, #NewcastlePunkRock, #VeganPunk, and #visionz.

He continued, “We used to have the rowdiest gigs you can imagine! Man, I really miss those days. It was all before I started rapping,” accompanied by the hashtags #punkrock, #sjw, #NewcastlePunkRock, #VeganPunk, and #visionz.

And

He continued, “Our concerts were always wild and unruly! I sure do miss those days. It was all before I transitioned into being a rapper,” followed by the hashtags #punkrock, #sjw, #NewcastlePunkRock, #VeganPunk, and #visionz.

Dean’s fellow actor, John Robertson, added his voice, encouraging him by saying, “Big Dean, just one thing, mate – you were really cool up there. Let’s gather the band again, I suggest.

Fellow MAFS alum Ryan Gallagher also joined the conversation with: ‘Still got the same shoes.’  

On season 5 of Married at First Sight, Dean didn’t find love with Tracey Jewel due in part to a ‘cheating scandal’ involving Davina Rankin. Now, he is happily engaged to Aimee Woolley, who starred on Beauty and The Geek.
