Why M3GAN 2.0 could be the biggest FLOP of the year as scathing reviews pour in for horror sequel
Despite high expectations and extensive promotion, it seems that M3GAN 2.0 might become the biggest box office disappointment in 2025.
Regardless of an intense promotional effort featuring collaborations with celebrities such as Megan Thee Stallion, Trisha Paytas, and Britney Spears, the reception for M3GAN 2.0 among both critics and audiences has been largely negative so far.
One critic labeled the action-filled sequel as ‘surprisingly poor,’ while another stated that it was ‘completely unwatchable.’
In simpler terms, Mashable stated that ‘M3GAN 2.0, the sequel, is a confusing mix of unoriginal ideas and influences. It can be shocking at times, but generally, it’s more derivative, perplexing, and lacks flavor.’
In an attempt to find reason for its prolonged production, this flawed production is heavy-handed and directionless, as described by The Daily Beast in their review entitled ‘M3GAN 2.0: You’ll Be Astounded at How Terrible It Is.’
According to Variety, ‘M3GAN 2.0 doesn’t quite measure up to the original movie.’ While the initial film was innovative and groundbreaking, M3GAN 2.0 was produced during a time when artificial intelligence is rapidly advancing, which it acknowledges and perhaps lacks the same level of originality.
IndieWire expressed dissatisfaction, noting that the sequel shifted from chilling AI terror to chaotic action-comedy. Additionally, they found fault with the awkward promotion strategies surrounding it.
‘In her first movie, M3GAN was campy enough to become an accidental gay icon,’ they wrote.
In June 2025, Blumhouse will release the sequel to their movie in theaters, riding a wave of marketing that’s quite specific and focused on Pride themes. Given its niche nature, it appears this strategy could potentially impact the film’s PG-13 rating.
In simpler terms, according to The New York Post, the film aspires to be a campy, entertaining choice for gatherings at gay bars.
Instead of being similar to “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” it’s quite different, but it’s full of rambunctious behavior and sporadic laughter at the doll’s witty insults.
Or,
While not like “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” this production is filled with rowdy antics and occasional chuckles triggered by the clever quips of the doll character.
‘M3GAN 2.0 is exactly 0.0 percent watchable,’ added Rolling Stone.
‘So the horror doll is now an action hero? Fighting tech bros with kung fu? WTF is going on here?’
The movie is also shaping up to disappoint at the box office according to early predictions.

According to multiple sources, it’s predicted that the opening weekend earnings for M3GAN 2.0 might range from $15 million to $20 million. This is noticeably lower compared to the $31 million the first movie made on its opening weekend.
Empire City Box Office finally spoke up about their concerns, and the initial day of sales solidified their worries.
It appears that #M3GAN 2.0 might be facing some challenges. Horror enthusiasts are disappointed as it’s not a horror movie, and there’s a concern that others might find it too humorous. With the summer movie season being crowded, I wonder who the primary audience for this film will be now.
However, it’s not all doom and gloom for M3GAN 2.0 just yet.
The movie still managed to pull in glowing reviews from The Wrap, Slant, and Empire.
As a lifestyle expert, I must admit that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the recent film I’ve been raving about. It seems to have struck a chord with many social media enthusiasts too! One particular fan put it quite aptly on their platform of choice: “It’s absurd, over-the-top, and just plain fun.” Couldn’t agree more!

“Another exclaimed that M3GAN 2.0 was fantastic!” said they, “The thrilling actions, the laughter-inducing moments, and its overall absurdity combine to create a delightfully enjoyable rollercoaster ride of an experience!”
I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamic between M3GAN and the other actors, as well as the way it delves into the risks associated with overusing artificial intelligence.
2022 saw the unexpected blockbuster hit, M3GAN, earning an impressive $226 million at the box office on a modest production budget of just $12 million.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I must share that this particular production left me thoroughly impressed. Not only did it resonate with critics, earning a remarkable 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but it also struck a chord with audiences, becoming a favorite among both.
There’s some uncertainty about whether another M3GAN film will be produced, but a separate sequel called SOULM8TE has officially been scheduled for release next year instead.
M3GAN 2.0 stars Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Amie Donald, and Jenna Davis.
In the thrilling follow-up, the menacing M3GAN AI robot doll takes up arms against a military robot named AMELIA, aiming to thwart an impending global AI domination.
