Anticipated new British “period detective drama with a difference” is one you’ll want on your radar
Mark Gatiss’ fresh murder mystery series titled “Bookish” has just unveiled its initial teaser, transporting spectators to the year 1946 in London.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d rephrase that sentence like this: Alongside Matthew Sweet, a cultural historian, the creators of the iconic Sherlock series collaborated on a new project. This intriguing show revolves around the life of Gabriel Book, a charismatic queer bookshop owner, played by none other than Mark Gatiss.
In a close friendship reminiscent of a “lavender marriage,” Gabriel, portrayed by Polly Walker from Bridgerton, shares this bond with his friend Trottie. At the same time, he excels in his role as a police consultant, relentlessly pursuing solutions to the most challenging investigations.

The series is set to premiere on U&Alibi on 16 July at 8pm, kicking things off with two episodes.
Before “Bookish” airs next month, the initial trailer offers a feel for its unique blend of dark and whimsical tones.
The scene begins as Trottie gracefully enters the store, declaring that a crime has taken place “in a questionable manner.
In response, Gabriel quickly says, “I prefer that kind of situation.” Later, he asks the police officers at the crime scene to share any intriguing, gruesome, or slightly controversial details they might have.
The trailer also introduces Jack (Connor Finch), who’s after the assistant job at Book’s Books.
After securing the job, Jack finds himself deep in solving complex cases alongside his new superior. However, it appears that his hiring wasn’t a mere coincidence.
Notable personalities make guest appearances sporadically across the six-episode series, with Joely Richardson from “The Gentleman” and Daniel Mays of “Line of Duty” among them.
In addition to Rosie Cavaliero from Chaos and Ella Bruccoleri from Call the Midwife, both Elliot Levey and Buket Kömür take on their respective roles as Inspector Bliss and Nora in this production.
The series is set to debut in about a few weeks, and what’s exciting is that it has already been greenlit for another season, featuring six more episodes as well.
I’m excited that the crew at U&Alibi is giving me another chance to revisit the realm of ‘Bookish’ and devise additional intricate mysteries for Gabriel Book and his team to untangle,” Gatiss expressed, expressing joy over the early renewal in May.
I am eagerly looking forward to the moment when our world, which has been crafted, will be experienced by the audience as they watch the initial series that is set to debut within the next couple of months.
Bookish will premiere on U&Alibi on 16 July at 8pm.
