Asher Keddie’s artist husband Vincent Fantauzzo reveals he was forced to lie to her to hide his childhood abuse

Asher Keddie’s spouse has spoken out about the emotional trauma he endured as a child, which he concealed for many years, including from his wife.

In a recent conversation on the No Filter podcast, artist Vincent Fantauzzo revealed that prior to publishing his latest book, Unveiled (released in March), he hadn’t disclosed his harrowing past experiences to anyone in his personal life.

The artist admits that he felt compelled to deceive, to conceal his embarrassment, since painful recollections of being sexually abused as a child were overwhelming for him to confront directly.

Vincent mentioned that he spoke with a friend the day before, who had recently finished reading a book, and this friend commented, “you know, next time you could have discussed it with me, as we usually do about everything.” It seemed like he was upset – but in reality, he wasn’t.

He’s quite friendly, but he felt that the matter should have been discussed with him. As for him, he hadn’t communicated with anyone at all.

He’s really kind-hearted, yet he wished the issue had been brought up to him. In terms of himself, he didn’t exchange a word with anybody whatsoever.

‘I’m pretty good at lying when it comes to shame.’

Vincent noted that Asher easily detects lies a mile off, yet when it comes to hiding abuse, he managed to do so effectively.

He mentioned that he found it impossible to share his secret with anyone. There’s something peculiar about experiencing abuse – I just can’t bring myself to discuss the specifics of it.

Vincent mentioned that he’s been deeply impacted by an event, leaving him with a persistent response or aftereffect that significantly influences his daily life.

In an interview with The Age earlier this year, Vincent expressed that he felt ready to stop concealing himself, yet he acknowledged that doing so would be difficult.

He found it incredibly challenging – almost impossible, in fact, to continue ignoring the past and confront issues that he had never shared with anyone, not even Asher. This is how he put it.

While working on his book, he discovered an approach to discuss the topic with his spouse, which ultimately strengthened their marriage.

In my expertise, I found it immensely enlightening when she began to grasp my emotional responses to various topics, such as her curiosity about why seeing children on the news would stir such a deep reaction within me. Gradually, it all became clearer and more understandable, as I shared this insight.

Recently, Asher provided an uncommon glimpse into her eleven-year-long marriage during a conversation about their meeting.

The actress, aged 50, disclosed in Marie Claire that her agent persuaded her to allow Vincent to create a painting of her, which is how they initially met.

As Vincent painted her, she noted that occasionally he’d glance up from his work towards the camera, and their gazes would meet.

‘He still does that eyes above the camera; he’s very charming,’ she said.

In my professional opinion, this loving duo thrives on the shared experience of nurturing their kids. It fosters a sense of unity and strengthens their bond, making each day more fulfilling as they navigate parenthood side by side.

She mentioned, “It’s what gives us the greatest pleasure – and I believe we can both relate to this – to share in the responsibility of raising our children. There’s something incredibly special about the unity we experience when parenting them and being a part of their journey.

Additionally, she gave a peek into the family life she shares with her son Valentino, who is nine, and Luca, Vincent’s 14-year-old son from a past relationship.

When I arrive home, I handle various tasks… However, our household responsibilities are divided, and as long as the children’s needs are prioritized, everything seems to work smoothly,” she explained.

Asher and Vincent tied the knot in the beachside ceremony on Fiji’s Turtle Island in April 2014.

The couple went on to welcome son Valentino in March 2015.

Among Vincent’s notable pieces are powerful portrayals of Julia Gillard, Baz Luhrmann, and Heath Ledger. Remarkably, a deeper insight into Heath Ledger’s internal turmoil was brought to light through these works, just a month following his passing in 2008.

The artist has a hotel in Brisbane named after him, which is filled with his paintings.

Vincent, an artist who has won the Archibald People’s Choice Prize four times, prefers to engage with his subjects prior to painting them. This way, he infuses a touch of personal connection into his artistic concept before applying his brush to the canvas.
