28 Years Later star Jodie Comer has broken her silence on a devastating moment from the film.
Under the guidance of director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland, the third installment of the horror series centers around a band of survivors residing on a secluded isle.
During their outing, Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and his child Spike (Alfie Williams) discover a peculiar physician named Dr. Ian Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), living on the mainland.
Following Spike’s covert operation to smuggle his sickly mother Isla (Comer) away from the island in pursuit of Kelson, it ultimately becomes clear that Isla is battling terminal cancer. In a deeply emotional moment, she chooses to take control of her fate and end her own life.
In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly regarding the demise of her character, Comer expressed: “I believed I had genuine control over that decision.
As a gamer, I can’t help but relate her on-screen voyage to the emotional rollercoasters we often face in our favorite video games. Beyond the cinematic struggles she endures, there’s an untold story of the internal strife and anguish she’s likely grappled with for years.
People often reach a stage where they no longer wish to endure what’s happening anymore. I believe Kelson provides them solace and support during this period.
Comer stated that her on-screen son being “acceptable in this instance” with Kelson indicated that Isla might be ready to move on. She further explained, “It may not be easy for us to grasp, but it was a complicated situation.”

Comer explained that since her on-screen son seemed alright with Kelson, Isla appeared to be ready to let go. She clarified, “Though it might seem difficult for us to understand, the moment was complex.
She added: “Despite her efforts to shield him, there are many things she hasn’t shared with him. I believe this is something many people can understand too.
In my personal experience, my parents sometimes hid certain details from me, intending it as assistance. However, looking back, I wish they had shared those facts with me. It’s quite complex, but I believe she was prepared for whatever followed.
