“Compelling” BBC period drama “full of intrigue” confirms update and fans will be delighted

The unexpected second season of a period drama is coming up, thanks to the great reception of its initial episode.

This year, the series titled “Miss Austen” aired on BBC One to favorable critic responses. The show, featuring Keeley Hawes (known for her role in “Bodyguard”), portrays Cassandra Austen, Jane Austen’s sole sister, across four 53-minute episodes.

Based on Gill Hornby’s novel titled “Miss Austen“, there’s exciting news as the sequel, “Miss Austen Returns“, is set to make a return. This upcoming adaptation is derived from Honby’s recently published continuation, “The Elopement“.

What to Read Next

This second series will see Hawes and the main cast reprise their roles, per Deadline.

As a gamer, I might ponder aloud, “When will Miss Austen make its comeback?” – as Christine Langan shared with the outlet.

In essence, the return of Cassandra was made possible because Gill had written another book, which we acquired the rights to, thereby opening up an opportunity.

She explained: “The Elopement” derives from an extensive family lineage; the Austens were quite prolific, with many members. This is a thoroughly researched true tale, which unfolds later on [from Miss Austen], during the 1820s, and concerns a branch of the family that includes Cassandra.

In addition to Emma Austen, the cast includes Jessica Hynes (known for The Royle Family) portraying Cassandra and Jane’s sister-in-law, Mary. Also part of the ensemble are Rose Leslie (famous from Game of Thrones), Max Irons (Young Sherlock), Alfred Enoch (Harry Potter series), and Patsy Ferran (Black Mirror).

The story unfolds across two different time periods, using letters that Jane wrote to Cassandra and other dear ones throughout her life as a foundation.

As I eagerly unravel each secret note, will Cassandra reveal her hidden truths or incinerate Jane’s cherished inheritance? This tantalizing premise captures my curiosity.

The Digital Spy’s critique praised the limited series as a heartfelt tribute to both Jane Austen and her female counterpart, effectively embodying the essence of Jane Austen.

At present, Miss Austen boasts a remarkable 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Notably, other reviewers have highlighted the thoughtful exploration of the enigma surrounding Cassandra’s burning of Jane’s letter posthumously.

As I sit here engrossed in my current game, I can’t help but feel a twinge of excitement. You see, Keeley Hawes is about to grace our screens again, this time starring in Prime Video’s upcoming crime thriller, “The Assassin.” It drops next month, and I can hardly wait!

Miss Austen is available on BBC iPlayer.
