Corrode: inspiration and design behind the new VALORANT map with developers

VALORANT’s upcoming map is called “Corrosion”. The creators have given a peek into what sparked their ideas and the strategies behind its design.

Riot Games unveiled details about their forthcoming VALORANT map titled Corrode. The creators have revealed the source of their inspiration, objectives, and ideas for this new map. Join us as we delve into its intricacies.

Old FPS vibes

Since its launch in 2020, the game’s map Corrode has encountered numerous hurdles. Joey Simas, Lead Map Designer for VALORANT, referred to it as a “strategic three-lane first-person shooter (FPS) map with a strong emphasis on intricate defense structures.” The layout prioritizes conventional FPS gameplay elements over an excessive reliance on abilities. This design aspect has proven difficult not only for casual gamers but also for professionals.

Joey underlines that Corrode layout offers defenders more chances to engage in action at the site and endure the onslaught of abilities attackers employ, while simultaneously restricting post-plant actions from distant positions off-site. This setup creates sites that are slightly intricate, but the central region remains relatively straightforward, encouraging effective team rotation strategies. The goal behind Corrode was to design a map where defenders face less utility pressure, thereby encouraging strategic planning, improved team communication, and strengthened tactical approach.

French castle inspiration

Corrode draws design influences from the architectural grandeur of French castles, harmoniously combining medieval, conventional motifs with hints of radionite. This fresh layout is situated on Omega Earth, making it the third map within this universe, succeeding Pearl and Sunset maps.

As a fervent admirer, I’d like to share some intriguing insights about VALORANT’s map, Corrode. Daniel McGowan, the Senior Manager for Art Direction, revealed that after the First Light, the waters of Corrode evaporated, leaving behind extensive salt flats and fostering ideal conditions for radianite supercell storms, which account for the map’s distinctive purple hues. The map is divided into two distinct areas: one resembling a castle architecture, while the other adopts a traditional village aesthetic, much like Fracture’s dynamic design.

Players can expect to observe distant moving vehicles such as trucks, trains, an ATLAS transporter, and a dynamic supercell storm on the horizon, which Daniel described as the “most expansive views yet” within the game.

Incentive for players

Starting from the release of patch notes version 11.00, the game area Corrode will be accessible. During the initial fortnight, players will incur only half the usual Ranked Rating (RR) loss upon defeat within Corrode. Yet, victories on this map will still grant the full RR reward. This setup aims to provide players with ample time to familiarize themselves with the new map and boost their confidence while navigating it, as Armand Asourian, VALORANT’s Game Product Manager, pointed out.
