I Want Him to Explore Earth Next
Even though there hasn’t been a confirmed sequel for Elios, fans are still eager to continue exploring Pixar’s legendary universes – and that desire remains unchanged with the studio’s latest production. Fortunately, lead actor Yonas Kibread already has ideas about what he’d like to see happen next.
In the global cinemas now is Kibread’s debut movie, where we find our protagonist searching for belonging and eventually kidnapped by extraterrestrials, gaining entrance into an alien society located far within the cosmos. Coincidentally, he encounters Brett Garrett’s character, Lord Grigon – a warlord who had just been refused entry to this very same community that Kibread seems to be effortlessly assimilating in.
In a recent chat, TopMob sat down with Yonas Kibread to delve into Pixar’s newest animated escapade. During their discussion, Kibread highlighted some crucial aspects of friendship and revealed his expectations for the narrative arc of Elios in its upcoming chapter.
Kibread pointed out that should an “Elios 2” occur, his preference would be for Elios to venture onto Earth, similar to how he previously explored the universe in the past. This plot development could align well given that Elios goes to great lengths to steer clear of Earth in the initial film.
In addition to his acting role, the actor held strong insights about the significance of friendship within the narrative of Elios. Kibreab shared with TopMob that “Being true to oneself is truly the best way to be, since it’s the most genuine version of yourself.
Yonas Kibreab on What He Wants to See in a Hypthetical Elio 2
“I Would Want Him to Explore Earth Next…”
- TopMob: “Hypothetically, if there were an ‘Elio 2,’ what do you want to do next with the character? What would you love to explore with him?”
Yonas Kibreab: Next, I’d love for him (Elio) to experience Earth, so he can enjoy time with his friends. Towards the end of the film, Elio goes through an emotional journey where he becomes a bit more reserved. Later on, you see him discovering himself. Just like how Elio travels through space in the movie, I’d like to see him explore our world similarly.
- TopMob: “Throughout the whole process, what was the most surprising challenge you faced as a performer while bringing this story to life?”
Kibreab: I find that for all movies, emotional scenes are actually more difficult for me compared to being humorous or goofy. This is partly because, when doing voiceovers, expressing emotions through just your voice can be tough since they can’t see your facial expressions as they would on camera. However, these challenging situations also taught me a great deal.
- TopMob: “Do you and Elio share the same desire to be abducted by aliens?”
Kibreab: Gosh, if given the chance, I’d absolutely take it! I’m not sure for how long, but I could surely spend a few days there. You know, there’s just so much in space that many of us haven’t experienced. It’s mostly something we hear about from astronauts, and to actually have that experience myself? That would be an incredible opportunity, one I’d jump at!
Elio Star Yonas Kibreab on the Importance of Friendship
“What’s Nice About Their Friendship Is That They Don’t Have to Be Different…”
- TopMob: “You mentioned friendship, which is a huge part of this film. How does Elios relationship with Glordon reflect your own experience in your life?”
Yonas Kibreab: Essentially, Elio and Glordon have a lot in common despite the fact that one is an alien and the other is human. What makes their friendship special is that they don’t feel the need to change or pretend to be someone they’re not because of their shared traits. In essence, they can simply be themselves. I believe this is wonderful. Similarly, with my friends, I can act as silly as I want and they won’t criticize me for it. It’s fantastic to always remain true to who you are, as that’s the best version of yourself you can be.
- TopMob: “Did you and Remy ever record lines together?”
Kibreab: To be honest, it’s been quite some time. However, let me tell you, it was an absolute blast! You see, I rarely get the chance to record with others, and that’s just how it goes with any show or recording. But when I had the opportunity to record with him, it was a riot because he’s much like myself in age, and it was thrilling to collaborate with someone my age. Moreover, we recently went to Disney World together for some press-related activities, which gave me an even better chance to get to know him better.
- TopMob: “Now, Elio is a really fun character, but early in the movie, you get access to some cloning goo, which then presents the opportunity for you to play two different versions of yourself. What was it like with that performance? How did you approach each one of these people?”
Kibreab: I believe Elio and the other portrayals of Elio are essentially the same character, yet distinct in some ways. To be more specific, I found the other Elio a bit unsettling. Although there were a few eerie scenes involving the other Elio, I felt that transitioning between him and my version of Elio was relatively seamless. This is because we often filmed our scenes back-to-back, so I would deliver one line followed by another, even though they belonged to separate characters at times. In fact, I found this dual role quite fascinating because it was a new and unique experience for me.
