Toby Jones and Stephen Graham’s forgotten London-set BBC spy drama is on Netflix now

Currently streaming on Netflix, the captivating series titled “The Secret Agent,” featuring an outstanding ensemble cast including Stephen Graham, Toby Jones, and Vicky McClure, is ready for your viewing pleasure!

The spy thriller originally aired on BBC One in 2016 and is adapted from the renowned novel of the same title penned by Joseph Conrad. The three-episode series was scripted for television by Tony Marchant, who had previously developed the drama “Public Enemies” for the BBC as well.

In 1886 London, the narrative of “The Secret Agent” unfolds. This story revolves around an individual who runs a Soho store but secretly serves as a spy for the Russian embassy. Regrettably, he pulls his loved ones into a heart-wrenching terrorist scheme. (Synopsis via BBC)

In this production, Jones assumes the lead role as Mr. Verloc, the clandestine protagonist, while Graham steps into the shoes of London’s top Inspector Heat. McClure, on the other hand, embodies the character of Winnie, his wife.

Upon being chosen for the part, Jones expressed his enthusiasm and curiosity about portraying Verloc, the title character from Conrad’s remarkably contemporary novel “The Secret Agent”.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but marvel at the extraordinary script that Martin McClure, star of Line of Duty, recently highlighted for the BBC series. His enthusiasm is contagious as he expresses his excitement about being involved in this remarkable production.

Additionally, the ensemble features Tom Goodman-Hill from “Humans,” David Dawson known for “Ripper Street,” Penny Downie starring in Netflix’s “The Diplomat,” and Marie Critchley recognized from “Waterloo Road.

Apart from Stephen Graham’s drama The Walk-In, another of his works that joined Netflix this year, has been thriving on the platform. Similarly, his British thriller Hyena, initially released in 2014, can also be streamed.

In the meantime, enthusiasts of Toby Jones can anticipate his appearance in an upcoming British murder mystery film that promises to be highly engaging. Additionally, Vicky McClure’s popular ITV police drama “Trigger Point” is set to return for its third season on television screens shortly.
