How to have the best Sunday in L.A., according to Judy Greer
It’s quite likely that you have come across Judy Greer in various roles throughout her extensive, spanning-multiple-decades career. She starred as Maggie Lang in “Ant-Man,” provided the voice for Cheryl Tunt in the long-running adult animated sitcom “Archer,” and portrayed Jennifer Garner’s best friend in the 2004 romantic comedy classic “13 Going on 30” – a role that mirrors their real-life friendship. Greer is also set to appear in the second season of Garner’s Apple TV series “The Last Thing He Told Me.
Currently airing on Apple TV+ is the heartfelt new golf comedy titled “Stick.” In this series, Greer portrays Amber-Linn, who isn’t just a friend but the ex-spouse of retired professional golfer Pryce Cahill, played by Owen Wilson. Even if you’re not into golf, you can still enjoy it. As Greer puts it, “I’m not a golfer myself, but I absolutely adore this show.
On her ideal Sunday, she prefers staying close to Larchmont, a place she’s called home for two decades. She explains that since her job requires frequent travel, she doesn’t always feel like exploring extensively during the weekends. Her perfect day would ideally be spent within her house, but today she plans to step out. She has a busy schedule lined up, including catching up on reading, visiting the farmers market and Dodger Stadium, watching a movie, spending quality time with her husband Dean Johnsen, her stepchildren, and her terrier mix, Mary Richards.

6:30 a.m.: A pot of coffee and reading in bed
I typically rise between 6 and 6:30 AM, not by choice but because my husband tends to sleep late. If it’s a sunny morning, I enjoy reading in bed. On cloudy days, I might head downstairs for some quiet time with a book and coffee. Once he stirs, I return upstairs to join him, sharing a cup of coffee in bed before we both begin our day. I cherish that cozy moment with my first pot of coffee in bed each morning.
The coffee maker is quite ordinary, similar to a Cuisinart one. Instead, we prefer a brand called Punk Bunny for our brew. Lately, we tried the dark roast, but found it too intense. We’re returning to the medium-dark roast instead. I usually add soy milk to it now.
Whenever I’m on work trips and lodging in Airbnbs, apartments, or similar places, I often find a cappuccino maker available, but we always ponder whether to buy one, only to never follow through. Instead, when out, I prefer visiting cafes like Lamill or Go Get ‘Em Tiger on Larchmont, and ordering a cappuccino there. Having my own cappuccino-making setup at home isn’t something I require.

9 a.m.: Two loops around the Silver Lake Reservoir
On that note, I plan to head towards Silver Lake Reservoir next. I’ll stroll around it a couple of times, which adds up to approximately four and a half miles. My little yet energetic pup will be joining me for the walk. Post-walk, I’d whip up a parfait at home. Occasionally, I indulge in their protein pancakes from Cafe Gratitude – what a delight! However, I usually avoid breakfast on Larchmont on Sundays due to the heavy crowds.

11 a.m.: Hit up the Larchmont Village Farmers Market
My husband and I aren’t professional cooks or chefs, but we have our favorite staples at the local farmers market. There’s a vendor who sells frozen soup that we often purchase, and I always grab some flowers and usually berries as well. We don’t consume much meat, but occasionally we indulge in grilled salmon, which my husband prepares. He gets the fish from the fishmonger and sometimes those Parmesan crisps he enjoys (and I end up eating them, despite his insistence that they’re for him). If we decide to make a large salad or similar dish, we pick up fresh produce. However, we aren’t quite like those dedicated home cooks, even though we aspire to be.

Noon: Stop at Chevalier’s Books
Afterward, I’d stroll towards our quaint neighborhood bookstore, Chevalier’s, greeting the staff and taking a leisurely browse. My book collection keeps growing, but it’s always tempting because there’s usually a fresh release that catches my eye, which I can’t resist purchasing. Lately, I’ve been drawn to hardcover editions since acquiring the first edition of a potential future Nobel or Pulitzer Prize-winning work is quite an exciting prospect.
My spouse commented, “It seems you purchase numerous books, yet you do make time to read them.” However, it’s not just random purchases. Currently, I’m engrossed in Barbara Kingsolver’s book titled “Unsheltered,” which I may have borrowed from a small library during a walk with my dog since it doesn’t appear brand new. I recently finished reading “Martyr” by Kaveh Akbar and was left in such awe that for a moment, I contemplated avoiding another book altogether due to the high expectations it set.

1 p.m.: A quick dip in the pool, some shopping and Dodger Stadium
Today, we’re heading back home, planning to take a swim in our less-than-pristine pool before that. Afterward, we’ll be dressing up in our Dodger attire and making our way to Dodger Stadium. There, we’ll reunite with my stepchildren and the four of us will enjoy watching the Dodgers play. They might indulge in some brews and perhaps some nachos. I’d prefer peanuts and Diet Coke, of course. I adore Sundays at the stadium because it’s a fun, laid-back atmosphere filled with families.
Amongst the many attractions in Los Angeles, Dodger Stadium has grown to be one of my cherished spots. It’s simply a stunning venue. Occasionally, I stroll along the entire circumference of the stadium, not only for exercise but also to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and sample various delicacies on offer.

4 p.m.: An afternoon movie and the best popcorn
The Mann Chinese Theatre is primarily our preferred cinema destination due to its proximity to our home, although it can be somewhat inconvenient as it’s quite popular among tourists. However, we’ve figured out the best parking spots and entry/exit routes, making our visits smoother now.
Instead of buying pre-popped popcorn, we prefer to make our own at home, a task typically handled by my husband who expertly handles it on the stove with kernels and coconut oil. We can’t help but feel like members of the Orville Redenbacher family, as we’ve experimented with various types of gourmet popcorn kernels, yet consistently find ourselves returning to Orville for the perfect pop. It’s our little secret that we aren’t afraid to admit – we believe Orville gives us the best popcorn experience, so that’s what we always choose.
Oh, let me demonstrate something rather quirky. Just a moment. [Greer vanishes and reappears with a large Ziploc bag.]]
I tend to secretly stash this in my handbag. I’m quite fond of munching on popcorn during movies, but the popcorn here is often not great for our health. Sometimes, I even smuggle in some dried mangoes. And yes, I usually still grab a Diet Coke. It makes me feel bad to not purchase anything at all.
That grand theater truly captivates me; its beauty is simply stunning. Los Angeles boasts some fantastic cinemas, many of which are historic and old. This particular one holds a special place due to its rich history. I’ve had the privilege of attending several film premieres there, yet my fondest memories are those simple moments when I’m just a regular moviegoer enjoying a film.

7 p.m.: Pasta for dinner
By the end of the day, I plan to dine at Osteria Mamma and indulge in their delectable pasta pomodoro. Now, I should clarify that this dish isn’t officially on the menu anymore, but if I could, I would ask them to make it for me because it’s simply amazing. My husband typically goes for their cacio pepe, which is prepared at our table with a giant wheel of cheese – quite a spectacle! We also enjoy sharing their tricolore salad. So, we’ll have a delightful, hassle-free dinner together on Sunday evening. To be honest, we didn’t buy much at the farmers market that day.

8 p.m.: Watch a little TV or read in bed
At times, we may find ourselves engrossed in a television series or a book, and depending on the day, we either continue watching an episode or read instead while in bed. Typically, I prefer retiring around 9 PM, but this week, due to exhaustion, I’ve been heading to bed at 8:30 PM. It seems odd because the sun is still shining, but by the time I finish my routine, which includes personal hygiene and flossing, it’s almost dark. I snuggle with my dog for a bit before reading, and then, yes, I turn off the lights by 10 PM. On Sundays, however, I strive for a long, restful sleep in preparation for Monday morning.
