That Time Jackie Chan Met Michael Cera While Promoting Karate Kid: Legends, And Thought He Was A Contest Winner

2025’s Movie Guide has given us quite a feast, not only with the movies themselves but also by bringing together some fascinating celebrities. For instance, who could forget that surprising kiss shared by Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey? Earlier this year, an unexpected encounter took place between Jackie Chan and Michael Cera. This unusual meeting transpired during Chan’s press tour for “Karate Kid: Legends”, with him initially mistaking Cera for a contest winner of some sort.

While discussing Wes Anderson’s film “The Phoenician Scheme,” the actor narrated an awkward encounter to NME. This incident was reminiscent of the obligatory yet polite introduction caused by his character’s love for bugs in the 2025 movie. Coincidentally, they were both promoting their respective projects at the same venue. It so happened that some crew members linked them together. According to Cera, Chan appeared unaware of his fellow Hollywood star, but snapped a photo thinking he was a fan of some kind.

Upon encountering him (Chan), his reaction was something along the lines of, “Who’s this person and what’s happening here?” Afterward, we snapped a photo together, but it seemed like he may have mistaken me for a contest winner.

In my opinion, I’d be thrilled if any celebrity encountered a similar situation, but the actor from Juno would undoubtedly be at the top of my list. I believe it’s his overall demeanor that earned him the role of Allan in Barbie, and it comes down to how effortlessly he handles everything. Given his extensive career with numerous Chan classics across various countries and a multitude of peers, it’s no wonder he hasn’t been recognized by the international star.

As a movie enthusiast, I delved into the sequel’s narrative, recounting my encounter – a photo op that turned out to be quite enjoyable overall. However, there was an undercurrent of unease as I felt like I was encroaching upon the precious moments of the esteemed actor from the iconic “Rush Hour” series before he resumed his press interviews. To express my thoughts, I put them into words:

“Though the experience was pleasant overall, it was a fleeting moment that I couldn’t help but feel like an intruder in the midst of the ‘Rush Hour’ star’s brief respite before diving back into the whirlwind of interviews.

He said, ‘Alright, let’s snap a photo right away. Join us.’ It wasn’t abrupt, but it felt as if I was intruding on his brief personal moment with his group before he went on air. That left me wondering, ‘Why am I here?’ Yet everyone was incredibly kind, and I had the pleasure of meeting Jackie.

Once more, the interaction seemed perfectly tailored for someone straight out of the “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” cast. From beginning to end, I found it all utterly entertaining, and I’m delighted to learn that Chan is always willing to spare a moment for a fan – even if it turns out that one isn’t fully aware of their own fame.

Since The Phoenician Scheme by Cera and Karate Kid: Legends by Chan have been released (and the latter was an unexpected delight for some fans), perhaps they could find the time for a rematch. After all, if an action star can handle the blows of dislocating his shoulder on the KKL set and recover swiftly, why wouldn’t he be up for engaging with Cera?
