Kane Rodriguez talks Houston, his relationship with TikTok and his plans for the future

Hailing from Houston, musician Kane Rodriguez was immersed in melodies since childhood due to his musical family. Grandfather, father, and sibling being musicians, and the tunes of cumbia, banda, and norteño frequently echoing within their home.

22-year-old Texas native kickstarted his music journey by performing with his siblings in a cumbia band during his teenage years, yet he felt a stronger pull towards corridos. As the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, he embraced his musical preferences more intently, sharing videos on TikTok of him singing and strumming his guitar.

In a simple and conversational style: His initial major success came from his emotional rendition of “El Chaman” by Aldo Trujillo and Legion RG in 2022. This song narrates the paradoxical character who, despite his tough exterior, struggles with emotional vulnerability. The video featured him alone with his guitar against a simple backdrop, filmed from above, eschewing any elaborate production. Yet, his powerful voice and musical talent were undeniably showcased.

For quite some time, podcasters Jason Nuñez, Diego Mondragon, and Angel Lopez have showcased emerging Mexican music artists. Now, they are utilizing their platform to publicly criticize these artists for remaining quiet on the subject of recent immigration raids.

In a recent chat, Rodriguez shared, “I noticed myself continuously expanding, then a few videos would explode in popularity, prompting requests for more content.” He continued, “Apparently, people enjoy my unique guitar sound, so I simply continue to record.” Rodriguez added, “TikTok appears to have played a significant role [in my success].

In April, the vocalist and versatile instrumentalist launched his first full-length album, titled “La Batuta,” through Warner Music México.

This LP’s skillful use of intricate instrumentation seamlessly enhances Rodriguez’s rugged singing style and his adventurous song lyrics. Over 13 tracks, these tales unfold about romantic victories, moments of melancholy introspection, and good times spent with friends, all while painting a vivid picture of his life.

Since the release of his album, the “Se Volvieron Locos” artist has been touring across the United States, with a planned performance at Downtown L.A.’s Peacock Theater alongside Chino Pacas, Estevan Plazola, Los Caimanes De Sinaloa, T3R Elemento, El de La Guitarra, and Omar Ruiz. However, due to the temporary curfew in L.A. and ongoing ICE raids within the city, this show has been unfortunately canceled.

Fans of Rodriguez can look forward to his upcoming show on June 20th at El Farallon Event Center in Lynwood. Before taking the stage, Rodriguez shared insights into his journey to stardom, working with fellow artists, and his aspirations for the future.

If you’re feeling like dancing the night away or savoring a michelada while grooving to Mexican tunes, these are the top spots for experiencing Los Angeles’s finest regional Mexican music venues. Enjoy the vibe!

This is your first studio album. What was the process of recording it like?

It took us about seven months in total, but we selected suitable songs and collaborated with the right songwriters. We incorporated various music genres, which extended the process, but I believe it was all worthwhile. Making the transition from live performances to studio work represents a significant leap.

How might growing up in Houston influence your artistic endeavors, and do you sense any responsibility to portray the city in your work?

In what ways could your upbringing in Houston impact your artistry, and do you feel a duty to depict the city in your creations?

Currently, Houston doesn’t have too many corrido artists, making it advantageous for me as one of the few from Houston, since I receive a great deal of support from my hometown.

I spent my childhood in the southeastern district of Houston, specifically in Pasadena, nestled within a modest trailer park. It wasn’t an excessively wild or particularly troublesome environment. I believe that living in such a neighborhood fueled my ambition to escape the urban landscape. This experience ultimately served as a foundation for my growth.

Currently, I believe Houston requires an individual capable of representing them and elevating their presence in the corridos genre. I feel that task falls upon me, and I’m eager to accept this role. Let’s aim for something even greater together.

The renowned Mexican balladeer shares insights on his forthcoming album, his debut as a main act in U.S. tours, and the authentic essence of ‘Your Wedding.’

Currently, you’re embarking on a tour and working alongside renowned artists. How does it feel to keep gaining more recognition, and how are you navigating this growth both personally and professionally?

It’s an unbelievable realization of a lifelong dream for me. From playing in our backyard almost every day, racking up 10 hours a day, I never thought I’d be performing alongside big-name artists. It’s absolutely mind-blowing! I try to keep myself from getting too overwhelmed or complacent. We strive to stay grounded and remember where we came from, as things are progressing at an incredible pace.

As a die-hard fan, I’m always amazed when I think about some of the artists and acts I’ve had the privilege to collaborate with in a professional setting. It still feels surreal sometimes!

Without a doubt, Legado 7 – they’re true veterans. I believe everyone would have been eager to listen to them around 2018, 2019 when I was still in high school. Therefore, the opportunity to collaborate with them and create a hit song is nothing short of mind-blowing.

Additionally, Adrian L Santos hails from the same hometown as my family in Mexico. He’s quite popular yet remarkably humble, making our collaboration one of my most enjoyable experiences.

How did your loved ones respond when you secured endorsement from a record label, an event that might have previously seemed to outsiders as if music wasn’t considered a genuine profession for you?

Initially, I must admit, I was skeptical because many aren’t successful in the music industry. It’s a tough battle, I can tell you. Yet, my mind was always in it. Fortunately, my parents understood and allowed me to pursue this passion. They stood on the sidelines, witnessing the fire burning within me and knowing that I wouldn’t be deterred – I’d only keep going. Now, they are incredibly proud of me, and I’m overjoyed to see them so happy.

With your album released and a tour planned, where do you envision this journey taking you next? What are your aspirations for the future?

In the following two years, my aim is to fill up stadiums with spectators. This is one of my primary objectives. My ultimate aspiration is to have countless individuals singing along to my melodies.
