Cobra Kai Showrunner Reveals Heartfelt Attempt to Bring Hilary Swank Back!
The hit series “Cobra Kai” has concluded its run, and although it successfully recruited many original stars for the show, one elusive figure remained out of reach throughout the series. Despite multiple attempts to bring back Hilary Swank as Julie Pierce, fans will not find her character in any of the episodes currently streaming on Netflix with a subscription. Recently, a producer involved in the project shed light on why they couldn’t secure Swank for the show and hinted at a possible return for her character in the future.
As a movie reviewer, I’ve always been intrigued by the behind-the-scenes stories of our favorite shows. In an interview with EW, Josh Heald shared some interesting insights about the attempted return of Hilary Swank in Cobra Kai’s final season. Originally, plans were underway to include The Next Karate Kid star in the show, a fact revealed by Heald and his fellow showrunners Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg during their 2020 TopMob interview. Now, we have a clearer understanding of their intentions and the efforts they made to bring Swank into the fold for the series finale.
In the initial stages, before the season even began, I extended an invitation, hoping there might be a chance for her to join us. The thought crossed my mind that she could seamlessly fit into our narrative without having to dedicate herself to a full 10 episodes or more. It was envisioned as a brief arc, much like what we did with Elisabeth Shue, where we could bring Ali back at a crucial juncture and significantly impact an essential relationship.
Indeed, Hilary Swank announced prior to the last season that she wouldn’t be present, and while Johnny and Kreese’s narrative reached a satisfying conclusion, there was no resolution for Julie Pierce’s storyline. It’s disappointing we didn’t get more, but it’s reassuring to know the show creators made sincere efforts to include her in the story.
Josh Heald pointed out that although the actress declined their proposal, it wasn’t an intentional slight. Essentially, it boiled down to scheduling conflicts, as she was swamped with work and couldn’t fit in a meeting with the team.
From her side, she maintained a respectful demeanor, but unfortunately, we didn’t have the chance to have a heart-to-heart conversation as is customary when reintroducing characters from our past works. She seemed uninterested in such an interaction, perhaps because she had young children or was busy with a production at that time. It was a polite decline of any proposal for a meeting. She didn’t wish for us to travel and bare our souls, as it wasn’t something she felt prepared to do at the moment.
The intriguing aspect of this tale lies in the fact that after the end of Cobra Kai Season 5, Hilary Swank stated that she wasn’t contacted by the show. It’s possible there was some misunderstanding, and the news of their attempt to reach her might not have reached the actress, or the conversation occurred before a potential phone call took place.
The main point to consider, especially if you’re a fan of the continuation series like Karate Kid: Legends after Cobra Kai, is that Josh Heald hasn’t abandoned the possibility of collaborating with Hilary Swank again. If there’s a tale to be told about Julie Pierce currently, he and his fellow co-showrunners would like to share it.
As a movie critic, I must confess that while this latest installment feels like an essential piece within the Miyagi-verse, it left me yearning for a bit more. The ensemble was not quite as expansive as we’ve come to expect, but rest assured, they didn’t compromise on the rich narrative they’ve carefully crafted. It serves as a tantalizing prospect for potential future visits to this universe.
More On Cobra Kai

Day after day, I found myself constantly yelling – it turns out there was an enormous amount of behind-the-scenes drama between Ralph Macchio, Cobra Kai, and the Karate Kid franchise, which came as a surprise to me before it became a blockbuster hit.
I’d be absolutely delighted to witness the return of the actor from The Next Karate Kid, portraying Julie Pierce once more in a future Netflix series. I believe that the audience still yearns for such narratives, despite the fact that interest might not have existed prior to Cobra Kai.
Currently, it appears as though a sequel or spinoff for “Cobra Kai” isn’t imminent. However, given its popularity among fans, one could speculate that they might be disappointed if a new series focused on Hilary Swank’s character were to emerge without any involvement from the original cast members. Maybe there’s an idea floating around that manages to incorporate her into the storyline while also reintroducing our beloved characters?
Currently, we can only hope that a new series within the Karate Kid universe will be proposed, and perhaps Hilary Swank will be involved. For now, I might revisit Cobra Kai as I find myself with more free time during the quieter summer months for TV.
