Tragic Loss: ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Star David Hekili Kenui Bell Passes Away at 46

David Hekili Kenui Bell, a well-known actor and cherished community icon in Hawaii, has sadly passed away at the tender age of 46.

A Talent Gone Too Soon

In the fresh live-action version of Disney’s beloved film, Lilo & Stitch, Bell made an appearance as a character fondly referred to as “The Big Hawaiian Dude” or “The Shaved Ice Man”. This humorous role was showcased in several scenes where a spilled shave ice played a part. Additionally, he has acted in shows like Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum P.I..

With great sadness, I inform you that my dear, kind, gifted, humorous, intelligent, and handsome little brother David H.K. Bell will be spending today with our Heavenly Father.

As reported by Variety, Bell sadly passed away on the 12th of June in the year 2025. The Hawaii Police Department mentioned that they don’t suspect any suspicious activities. At this time, an official reason for his passing hasn’t been disclosed.

A Passion for Acting and Community

Born and raised in Kaimuki, Bell went to Kalani High School and eventually found employment at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole, serving as an assistant airport superintendent. Here, visitors frequently recognized his voice broadcasting welcomes through the airport’s public address system, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for both vacationers and residents alike.

Beyond my daily grind, I harbored an ardent affection for acting, voiceovers, and cinema as a whole. As a valued member of the Screen Actors Guild, I took great pride in showcasing my work on social media platforms. In the days prior to my departure, I shared glimpses behind-the-scenes of “Lilo & Stitch” on Instagram – photos from set and snippets of my audition tape. In May, I was privileged to attend a private screening of the film with the cast and crew.

At that time, he expressed how amazing it was to witness what he considered ‘true stars’ – our local crew in Hawaii. He firmly believed they should receive just as much, if not more, recognition!

His sister remembered how much her brother loved performing.

She stated, “David delighted in his acting career, providing voiceovers, and traveling with Brutus as a representative of Kona Brew. The world of films and entertainment sparked such excitement within him, and it was heartening to see how much he appreciated the artistic realm.

His Local Pride and Cultural Impact

Apart from his acting careers on screen, Bell also made an enduring impression in his local community. He was admired for his friendly demeanor, sense of humor, and unwavering commitment to preserving Hawaiian traditions. As his sister remarked, “His unique talent for speaking with English fluency, deep cultural insight, and mastery of Pidgin language made him a precious gem.

David Hekili Kenui Bell significantly impacted the movie scene in Hawaii with his remarkable work and vibrant character, touching countless lives. His departure has left an emptiness that those who knew him deeply feel, and he will be fondly remembered.
