The murky reasons why these 7 TV shows were mysteriously cancelled

Typically, TV series are taken off the air, and unfortunately, this is beyond our control; however, it’s comforting to understand the reasons behind saying goodbye to our beloved characters.

As a dedicated gamer, I can relate this scenario to the gaming world. Sometimes, a game doesn’t reach its grand finale because it hasn’t garnered enough players or the developers decide to venture into new territories. However, there are instances where the reason for a game’s cancellation isn’t immediately apparent – at least not right off the bat.

Previously, we provided you with some utterly baffling explanations for series terminations. Now, let me share seven instances when television shows mysteriously ended, and the true reasons behind their cancellation surfaced long afterward.

What to Read Next

1. Freaks and Geeks

A single-season series that aired was Judd Apatow’s teen comedy-drama, but the brief run didn’t hinder the show’s main actors like Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jason Segel, and Lizzy Caplan from achieving greater success afterwards.

Back in the day, I had a chance encounter with Garth Ancier, ex-NBC boss, during a break at Saturday Night Live. He finally spilled the beans about why that awesome show of ours got axed after just 12 episodes.

As a gamer, I recall Ancier sharing that Apatow didn’t take my suggestions seriously when working on Freaks and Geeks, aiming to provide us “occasional victories” over the popular crowd. Later, he admitted, “I despised canceling this show… It was a regrettable decision that still weighs heavily on me. Unfortunately, it was consistently NBC’s least-watched program.

2. Pushing Daisies

Previously disrupted by a screenwriters’ dispute, the peculiar detective series created by Bryan Fuller, revolving around a pastry chef with the uncanny ability to animate people, was unfortunately terminated after running for just two seasons. However, executive producer Barry Sonnenfeld believes he may have uncovered the reason behind its untimely end.

2017 saw him admit candidly to HuffPost that our production faced a significant delay of nearly a year, which prevented us from sustaining a sufficient length and consistency to foster word-of-mouth. Additionally, he expressed regret over the script’s tone, suggesting it was excessively cute. He felt that the scripts could have benefited from a stronger plotline.

3. Firefly

Indeed, Firefly – a series frequently hailed as an epitome of beauty tragically terminated early. Though some ardent fans may speculate that Fox intentionally sabotaged its success, the truth is that its unexpected end was due to insufficient viewership.

Gail Berman, who once held the position of Fox Entertainment president, stated in 2011 that if she had to make the decision again regarding a certain show, she might have thought about it differently but she isn’t convinced it would have altered the outcome. It was primarily a matter of numbers. The show was fantastic and she enjoyed working with [Joss Whedon] on it, but it was an expensive production, one of the bigger ones, and it wasn’t pulling in the required viewership figures.

4. The Fades

Reflecting on it now, it’s truly astounding to ponder over the fact that the supernatural drama “The Fades” didn’t make a comeback, especially considering its creator, Jack Thorne, is the genius mind behind shows like “Skins” and “This Is England.” With an ensemble cast boasting talents such as Daniel Kaluuya, Iain de Caestecker, Natalie Dormer, and Tom Ellis, it seemed almost unstoppable. However, not even a BAFTA for Best Drama Series could shield it from cancellation.

A couple of months following the public uproar over the sudden move, the former head of BBC Three, Zai Bennett, clarified that the program didn’t resonate with young adults and asserted that its audience was primarily older than the 16-32 demographic that the channel intended to target. In other words, it seems they missed their mark.

5. Dead Like Me

Consider giving a moment’s reflection to Bryan Fuller, who finds himself in his second series featured here, but unfortunately departed from the show Dead Like Me following just five episodes. Unfortunately, Showtime decided to cancel this MGM TV production that centered around grim reapers after two seasons, leaving fans without a clear rationale. However, Fuller has expressed his unique thoughts on the matter, as he shared in a 2005 interview.

According to him, Showtime wasn’t content with the narrative flow on the series, and everyone involved felt dismayed by MGM. It’s important for fans to understand that Showtime handled the cancellation admirably. The decision was made because of deteriorating quality and a feeling that the issues would persist.

Which doesn’t quite clarify what the problem with MGM was, but okay.

6. Veronica Mars

It was evident that Veronica Mars might not continue beyond its third season when The CW decided to air Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll in its original time slot. Even after Rob Thomas’s teen noir came back, there was little it could accomplish to avoid its ultimate cancellation.

In a 2007 interview, Thomas shared that The CW discussed him starring in a freshman police drama as a potential move to rescue Veronica Mars. The creator viewed this as their last chance, with Veronica transitioning into a first-year cop. Unfortunately, this strategy didn’t succeed. “We experienced a swift reversal from revived to cancelled once more,” he mused.

However, even though the original series ended, we did receive a film spin-off some years later, followed by a brief return in the form of a single season revival in 2019.

7. Clone High

Regarding MTV’s animated series Clone High, though it propelled the careers of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, unfortunately, it managed to complete just a single season before MTV unexpectedly decided to terminate the show. The reason for its premature end was an unforeseen development that left everyone taken aback.

It was discovered that the portrayal of Gandhi in the show sparked anger among Indians, although the show had not been aired within the country, leading some politicians to stage hunger strike demonstrations in protest.

MTV apologised for causing outrage and cancelled the show, ostensibly because of low ratings.

Bill Lawrence told EW that his show was the only one he’s ever had canceled due to a symbolic hunger strike led by members of the Indian parliament. Miller added, ‘It was an extraordinary tale, but they didn’t want us discussing it at all. For years, we were essentially silenced about the protests in India and related events.’

8. Airwolf

In the 1980s, airwolf, a series featuring a man and his attack helicopter, became synonymous with Saturday evening television. During that period, its lead actor, Jan-Michael Vincent, earned the highest salary among all TV personalities. Despite its massive popularity, the show eventually faced some challenges. So, let’s explore what led to its eventual fate.

Booze’n’drugs.

For much of his life, Vincent struggled with both alcoholism and addiction, repeatedly finding himself in legal trouble due to charges of driving under the influence, drug possession (specifically cocaine), and domestic abuse. He ultimately passed away in 2019, having previously undergone surgery to amputate a leg due to complications from arterial disease.

9. Luck

The popular horse-racing drama produced by HBO featured Dustin Hoffman as a reformed criminal out for retribution against his old companions. It was packed with potential – everything but the good fortune associated with its title. Tragically, three horses lost their lives during production. To avoid the negative public backlash that might ensue, HBO decided to halt the project.
