We Were Liars, a twisty thriller based on a bestselling novel, has landed on Prime Video.
The eight-episode series is inspired by the novel “phenomenon” penned by E Lockhart, and it chronicles the tale of Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind from Gossip Girl), a young lady who hails from an affluent family. Every summer, she vacations with her extended relatives on their exclusive island.
With her cousins Joseph Zad, who goes by Johnny, Esther McGregor, known as Mirren, and friend Shubham Maheshwari, the quartet refers to themselves as ‘the truth-benders’.
What to Read Next
A year ago, I was in an unusual mishap that left me with amnesia, and now, I’m back on this very island, seeking answers about my past. As I unravel the mysteries surrounding my accident, I find myself questioning everything I once believed to be true.
In the narrative provided by the creators, we find that one year following a baffling incident causing memory loss, a 17-year-old girl named Cadence revisits Beechwood, an isolated island near Martha’s Vineyard, in search of explanations.
At their exclusive summer retreat, members of the notable Sinclair family convene, choosing silence over discussion regarding the past incident. Neither her childhood companions known as ‘The Liars’, nor her former flame Gat, are willing to broach the subject. Left with no choice, she takes it upon herself to unearth the hidden truths.
In 2014, when it first hit bookstores, the initial edition of this novel made it to the New York Times Bestseller list. Then, in March 2023, Amazon MGM Studios decided to produce it.
Julie Plec, the showrunner with a background in “The Vampire Diaries”, expressed her hope that readers of the book will be extremely satisfied.
She stated to Deadline that in our adaptation, we’ve managed to cover all the key points and rhythmic elements as the book does, while simultaneously building a rich and complex universe to give depth and multiple layers to the adult characters.
Additionally, she hinted at a follow-up series, possibly inspired by the novel’s precursor titled “Family of Liars.” She further mentioned that “In theory, it will delve more into the mothers’ lives and introduce an additional generation to the narrative.
