He’d Have a Lovely Gay Dragon Too
For quite some time, there have been discussions and assumptions that Gobber, the cherished blacksmith from “How to Train Your Dragon”, might be gay. The second and third animated movies seem to hint at this possibility, yet they never explicitly confirm or deny it. As we approach the release of the live-action film in 2025, we had a chance to address this ongoing discussion with actor Nick Frost.
During conversations with the cast of How to Train Your Dragon, Jeff McCobb inquired about Nick Frost’s character’s sexuality in Gobber, since Frost is often seen as an unconventional gay icon, similar to The Golden Girls or The Babadook. In response, the Hot Fuzz actor addressed these theories by sharing his thoughts on the subject.
It seems quite plausible to me. I’m not sure if it’s been explicitly stated, but Dean DeBlois might have hinted that Gobber could be gay. If so, I think it would be wonderful if his dragon companion shared the same orientation too.
McCobb examined the theories and proof supporting the notion that Gobber might be gay. This analysis encompassed a particular scene from the movie “How to Train Your Dragon 2” (available for streaming with a Peacock subscription). In this scene, he pointed out the reasons why Gobber remained unmarried. To further elaborate, Frost expressed his desire that this aspect of his character could be delved into more in these upcoming live-action films, stating:
However, it’s worth mentioning that we have received approval for two more episodes featuring Gobber. Consequently, expect to witness the development of a new facet in Gobber’s character.
I genuinely wish that this tale flourishes beautifully. It would be fantastic if the LGBTQ+ representation becomes a part of this series, and it’s heartening to imagine Gobber in a loving partnership. Thus, let’s keep our fingers crossed that the long-anticipated storyline receives special attention in the forthcoming “How to Train Your Dragon 2”.
I mean, they already have a gay icon in the role, as Frost told us:
For some time now, I’ve appreciated being associated as a symbol for the LGBTQ+ community. In fact, I was given the opportunity to grace the cover of [American Bear]. However, with great regret, I had to decline the offer. My costume concept was centered around a miniature naval uniform or pearl-handled pistols and chaps.

Each of these options maintains the structure and meaning of your original sentence while providing a slightly different way to phrase it.
He’s correct; for quite some time, he has been widely recognized as a symbol of the gay community. In fact, during his appearance on Conan in 2013, he openly shared that he aspired to be on the cover of American Bear magazine. He mentioned that larger men who are attracted to hairy men find him appealing. He even joked about what he would wear for the cover shoot, suggesting a white pair of chaps, a white cowboy vest, and a small cowboy hat, along with two miniature revolvers.
It’s apparent that his concept for the cover art has remained consistent, and it seems unlikely that his perspective on Gobber will alter as well.
Currently, I’m eagerly anticipating that the character Gobber’s identity and sexuality may be further developed in How to Train Your Dragon 2. Although representation of LGBTQ+ characters has improved significantly in animated films from studios like Disney and DreamWorks, there is still ample space for progress. By having Gobber openly discuss his sexual orientation and potentially even experiencing a romantic storyline, we could introduce a fresh and heartwarming narrative to this cherished series, expanding its universe even further.
