According to the director of Stellar Blade, Hyung-Tae Kim, ShiftUp has no intention of regulating player modifications (mods). However, Kim hopes that creators will develop more intricate and advanced mods beyond what we’ve seen so far.
Following more than a year of exclusivity on PlayStation 5, Stellar Blade made its debut on PC last week, performing exceptionally well. It outperformed the PC launches of God of War and Ghost of Tsushima, earning the title as PlayStation Studio’s most successful release on PC, second only to Helldivers 2. Given that Stellar Blade, a game with much-discussed character aesthetics before and after its launch, has garnered significant popularity, it’s no surprise that numerous mods for the game are thriving.
In a conversation with This Is Game, Shiftup CEO Hyung-Tae Kim and game director, discussing Stellar Blade on PC, expressed a generally positive outlook about modding. To put it simply, ShiftUP doesn’t have any rules against mods and has no intention of pursuing those who create them. However, they did caution that certain mods might cause the game to malfunction. In such cases, they advise players to revert back to the original version of the game.
Indeed, the topic of sexualized modifications arose in the discussion. Kim points out that since Stellar Blade is an adult-rated game, there’s no need to restrict such modifications because the community can handle it responsibly. He also notes that if ShiftUp were to take action against these mods, they would still find their way to players.
Kim expresses his concern, however, that some players might create and sell sensitive or antisocial mods for a high price. His primary concern, though, is the potential for such creations within the player base.
Although Kim doesn’t have issues with numerous nude modifications or slight adjustments in gameplay, he currently feels that the modding community’s power is limited. He expressed his hope for modifications that alter the game experience rather than just offering new costumes. He also mentioned that expansions to the user’s play experience would be appreciated, although he acknowledges it can be challenging without official modding tools. In the future, he hopes for significant enhancements to the gameplay, possibly improving aerial combat so it’s not completely pointless?
