Marvel Shocks Fans With First Fantastic Four Casting—and It’s Not Who You Think
In an exciting turn of events, I learned from Marvel Studios that among the four main actors cast for the upcoming “Fantastic Four” movie, it wasn’t who we fans had been anticipating to be cast first. After decades of urging for a Marvel Cinematic Universe adaptation of The Fantastic Four, our prayers have finally been answered as Marvel Studios confirmed a “Fantastic Four” film is on its way to enrich the franchise. With production now underway, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach were unveiled as the stars who will bring Marvel’s iconic family to life on screen.
In “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, as per Marvel Studios, Ebon Moss-Bachrach turned out to be the initial actor among the four primary family members to secure a role, which might come as a surprise since it was thought that one of the other main actors had been cast first.
According to an interview with Empire Magazine, director Matt Shakman disclosed that Ebon Moss-Bachrach was the initial family member to be chosen for the Fantastic Four: First Steps production, while Pedro Pascal was the final cast member. Essentially, Moss-Bachrach will portray The Thing, implying that Marvel Studios filled out the team’s physical strength first in their casting process.
Previously, there were speculations in an earlier report about The Fantastic Four that Sue Storm was expected to be the initial cast member of Marvel’s original team. However, it came as a shock when it was revealed that Moss-Bachrach was actually the first one to join the team.
It’s noteworthy that during the interview, Shakman shared some insights about how Pascal was cast for the role.
Shakman was seeking an actor capable of embodying diverse aspects, a role that Pascal was well-suited for.
He mentions that he was searching for an actor who could embody various aspects, to which he adds: “There is not just the intellectual Reed Richards, but also the action star, the commander, the spouse, the parent, and the comrade. I had faith that Pedro possessed the versatility to portray each one.
In his own words, Pascal elaborated on his role-fitting process as Reed Richards. Particularly, the actor expressed his fascination with the solitude that would come with portraying Reed, stating that he found it intriguing to ponder over how lonely the character might feel.
I found it intriguing to ponder the solitude such a situation would entail. He exhibits an extreme form of worrying – his mind capable of calculating potential dangers on a grand scale, yet emotionally attuned. It was a captivating paradox. I wasn’t just curious about who I was engaging with in the game, but also about the person behind the character.
The Incredible Four: Initial Strides
In this upcoming movie, Julia Garner takes up the role of a female version of The Silver Surfer, while Ralph Ineson portrays Galactus. Mark your calendars for a theater visit on July 25, 2025!
Why Was Sue Storm Not Cast First?
Following the announcement that Sue Storm would reportedly be the inaugural casting choice for the Fantastic Four, it was widely assumed that Marvel Studios had secured an actress for the part. However, it turned out to be unexpected when she wasn’t actually the first one chosen.
There’s a chance that Marvel Studios had already chosen an actress for Sue Storm, but the deal didn’t work out. Additionally, it’s possible that both Jack Kirby and another actress (or multiple actresses) were being considered for the role, which made Marvel Studios take a bit longer to make their final decision about who would portray the character.
As a film enthusiast, I must say, one of the intriguing aspects about Shakman’s remarks is that Moss-Bachrach was the initial choice for the role. This implies that the actor undeniably demonstrated something that left Marvel Studios in awe, and this should only amplify our anticipation that he will embody the character flawlessly.
