2025 Superman Movie Set in Real-Life Delaware: What You Need to Know!
2025’s upcoming “Superman” movie has been confirmed to be set in a well-known American location, following the tradition of Superman stories that usually take place in the mythical city of Metropolis. Interestingly, the real-world setting for this fictional DC Comics metropolis changes in different portrayals.
The upcoming Superman merchandise (as disclosed by Ferris Wheel Press) has verified that the Daily Planet, the fictional newsroom where Lois Lane and Clark Kent work, will be situated in the movie. An illustration on the licensed Superman fountain pen box art reveals that the Daily Planet’s address is “42 Concord Street, Metropolis DE 19840.
Indeed, just as anticipated, the Daily Planet can be found within the mythical urban landscape of Metropolis. Yet, it’s intriguing to note that this imaginary city is geographically placed within the state of Delaware in the revamped DC Universe. This revelation underscores the fact that Metropolis now exists canonically within the real-life U.S. state in the new DCU. Superman marks the debut film in this reimagined universe, thus establishing the foundation for positioning its fictional cities.
It’s quite appropriate to situate Metropolis within Delaware when it comes to the character of Superman, as this actual location mirrors his home city in DC comics. In the DC comic books, the real-life location of Metropolis in the United States has been variously depicted, with its original creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster drawing inspiration from their hometown, Cleveland, but often portraying it as resembling New York City. However, other Superman narratives, such as Smallville, imagine Metropolis as being situated in Kansas, near the farm where Clark Kent spent his childhood.
In modern adaptations, Delaware serves as an unofficial stand-in for Metropolis. The DCEU films like “Man of Steel, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and “Justice League” place Metropolis within Delaware, and the new DCU also depicts it as such in “Superman.
David Coronswet is set to star as both Clark Kent/Superman in the upcoming DCU film. Accompanying him will be a group of other DC characters, with Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult taking on Lex Luthor, and Skyler Gisondo playing Jimmy Olsen. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
What Does This Mean For Gotham in the DCU?
In the new DC Universe, it remains to be seen if Gotham, the sister city to Metropolis, will also be established in Delaware, since Superman is now based there. Typically, in DC Comics, Metropolis and Gotham City are located on opposite sides of the Delaware Bay, with Gotham being part of New Jersey.
In the DCEU (DC Extended Universe), as portrayed in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”, and also hinted at in Matt Reeves’ version of “The Batman” (though this is an Elseworlds story, so it may not be the same Gotham for the new DCU), the settings shared a particular characteristic.
In the upcoming movie, Superman might provide details about Gotham’s location to help fans recognize it. If not, the initial DCU project focusing on Gotham could be the Clayface film, as progress on another significant Batman project, The Brave and the Bold, seems to have slowed down.
It remains unclear where upcoming DCU projects will set their cities. Historically, National City (Supergirl’s city) has been modeled after San Diego. With the production of “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” it will be intriguing to discover where they choose to establish Superman’s cousin’s base and the homes of other DCU heroes within the new universe.
