Andor’s Tony Gilroy Addresses Cassian and Jyn Romance Theories

Towards the finale of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”, it might be understandable to assume that Cassian Andor and Jyn Erso had developed a romantic bond. Scenes such as their intimate elevator glance and their final moments together on Scarif stirred many “Star Wars” enthusiasts to root for a relationship between these characters, leading to the popular fan theory known as ‘Cassian and Jyn‘. However, during the production of the recently concluded “Andor” series, Tony Gilroy, who co-wrote “Rogue One”, chose not to focus on these romantic theories. Yet, he did offer a thoughtful message to those fans who were hoping for a deeper romance between the two characters.

Throughout the two seasons of “Andor,” a series accessible via Disney+, I found myself deeply invested in the complex and tumultuous relationship between Diego Luna’s character, Cassian Andor, and Adria Arjona’s Bix Caleen. Despite the ardent fans shipping Cassian with Jyn, creator Tony Gilroy wasn’t deterred from exploring a different romantic dynamic. Speaking to Collider, he expressed:

“Even though I was cognizant of the Cassian-Jyn shippers, I chose not to let that hinder me from delving into this unique and compelling relationship.

I can’t help but empathize with those who dedicated so much effort to the fan fiction and immersed themselves deeply in it. Although it doesn’t hold official recognition or legal obligation, it’s crucial to remember the time and passion invested. It’s like stepping on someone’s garden of dreams – not a pleasant thought. I understand that change is inevitable, but I can foresee that some may struggle to move past this. My sincerest apologies are extended. Truly, I feel for them.

Tony Gilroy chose to acknowledge and respect the enthusiasm of Star Wars fans who preferred pairing Cassian and Jyn, instead of disregarding or dismissing their perspective. This wasn’t a reflection of Gilroy being critical of the ship, but rather a decision that didn’t align with his creative vision for Andor. For him, it was crucial to delve into Cassian’s relationship with Bix, instead of portraying Jyn as his sole love interest.

Disney+ offers you an exciting streaming platform where you can enjoy Rogue One, Andor, and the entire Star Wars collection of movies and shows. The new ad-supported plan is available for just $9.99 per month. If you prefer an ad-free experience, you can opt for a monthly fee of $15.99 or save 16% by pre-paying $159.99 annually. Indeed, Tony Gilroy acknowledged during the interview that there’s a case for Cassian and Jyn to be romantically involved due to their shared experiences. However, he doesn’t view it as a fully developed romance. In his words:

“It’s plausible that Cassian and Jyn could develop feelings for each other given everything they’ve been through, but I wouldn’t necessarily categorize it as a full-blown romance.

It’s useful to mention that you might embark on a project tomorrow where you could form deep bonds with several individuals, not necessarily romantic connections. Later, you may discover that these close friends have been married multiple times. Our personal histories can be complex and intricate, often more so than we care to acknowledge.

As a dedicated cinephile, I was thrilled to learn that Benjamin Bratt, who plays Mon Mothma’s loyal aide, Andor’s Bail Organa, shared his hopes for an earlier appearance in season 2. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. If only we could have seen him grace our screens sooner!

In a recent discussion, Denise Gough (from Andor) shared her thoughts on why she found the outcome of her Star Wars character particularly fulfilling. Moreover, she expressed great enthusiasm about the concept of a spin-off for the character.

Regrettably, Cassian’s relationship with Bix ended in a heart-wrenching way before he encountered Jyn Erso. About a year prior, shortly after Cassian had chosen to leave the Rebellion to be with Bix, she departed from Yavin IV and urged him to stay with the Rebels and aid them in overthrowing the Empire. It’s been confirmed by Adria Arjona that at this time, Bix was aware she was carrying Cassian’s child.

Bix vowed to locate Cassian after the Empire fell, but that didn’t happen; unfortunately, Diego Luna’s character remained unaware of being a father. However, it’s comforting to know that he was with Jyn Erso in his last moments instead of being alone. Here’s hoping there will be a time when Bix and her child can reappear together.
