Downton Abbey Future REVEALED?! You Won’t Believe What’s Next!

Following Charles Dickens’ words from “A Christmas Carol,” life is filled with encounters and goodbyes. Although the 2025 movie schedule won’t include a fresh take on Tiny Tim’s supposed demise, it will unveil “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.” This film will undoubtedly signal the end of an epoch in pop culture. Nevertheless, series creator/writer Julian Fellowes has suggested potential paths for the Crawley dynasty to persist, and there’s a popular fan theory that might bring joyful tears to fans’ eyes.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale Might Not Be The End Of The Crawley Family Legacy

The deadline for the Tribeca Film Festival event celebrating Season 3 premiere of “The Gilded Age” found Julian Fellowes busy at work. Consequently, discussions about “Downton Abbey 3” ensued, with him discussing the final event that’s set to wrap up the cinematic trilogy of the ITV series. Yet, Fellowes appears hesitant about ruling out a potential revival altogether, hinting at an intriguing possibility when asked if the threequel will indeed be the finale: the prospect of its continuation may not yet be over.

Each time I confidently declare, “Yes, absolutely! Goodbye, I won’t do that again.” However, within a year, I find myself repeating the same actions. Now, I refrain from making such firm promises like ‘never’. But I believe this might be the final season with the original cast. They’ve been together for 15 years, which is quite a run on a TV series.

It’s possible that Mr. Carson’s prediction of a century of history at Downton could still hold true. However, as mentioned earlier, the original cast members may not be involved in any future projects related to Downton Abbey. Upon rewatching the teaser for the Grand Finale, I find myself questioning whether this new project will have any connection to the famous estate itself.

Switching characters could make for an engaging storyline, whether it’s the escapades of the Crawley family beyond their estate, or the saga of a potential new family settling on the property. However, that’s not the only intriguing hint Julian Fellowes provided. He also alluded to something connected to the ongoing discussions among fans of The Gilded Age since its inception.

The Gilded Age Crossover Theory Could Still Become A Reality

As a captivated movie critic, I must say that ever since the debut of Julian Fellowes’ long-anticipated series, “The Gilded Age”, viewers like myself have been tantalized by the prospect of an enticing crossover with the beloved “Downton Abbey”. While Fellowes has been adamant about avoiding the use of ‘never’, he subtly fueled speculation by offering a glimmer of hope in regards to intertwining these two historical sagas.

Maybe. We’re not done yet, so we’ll see.

Although the latest Max subscription offers storylines from 1883 New York and Downton Abbey beginning in 1912, there’s always been a hint of a connection. The most compelling link suggested so far has been the character of American-born Cora Crawley (played by Elizabeth McGovern), whose family’s wealth was amassed before the events shown in Downton Abbey. However, up until the first two seasons, no ties between the two series have been established.

With plans beginning at just $9.99 a month and the chance to upgrade to higher-tier premium services, subscribing to HBO Max is an excellent choice! If you’re excited about The Gilded Age, or looking to explore its intricate portrayal of society drama, the first two seasons are already accessible, providing a perfect warm-up for the Season 3 premiere on June 22nd. Regrettably, brandy snifters are not part of the package. Check out the deal here!

Despite an abundance of intriguing possibilities, it remains uncertain whether the Levinson family will engage in business with George Russell (Morgan Spector) and his unpredictable investments, or if a young Violet Crawley will spar verbally with Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) in New York. The storyline could take any direction as long as Julian Fellowes’ conditions are met. Regardless of the outcome, I eagerly anticipate _Downton_ continuing in some capacity or another.

Prepare yourself for a summer filled with anticipation as “The Gilded Age” Season 3 debuts on June 22nd at 9 PM ET, exclusively on HBO/HBO Max! On the other hand, the grand finale of “Downton Abbey” promises to wrap up the series elegantly, hitting cinemas nationwide starting September 12th.
