“Nail-bitingly tense” returning crime thriller with “addictive” story announces exciting cast update

The gripping crime thriller Presumed Innocent has just announced an intriguing update about its cast, as a well-known actor has signed up to join the team.

Last year saw the premiere of a new Apple TV+ series, centering around a prosecutor character portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal. For Season 2, it has been unveiled that Rachel Brosnahan, known for her roles in Superman and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, will headline the cast. Additionally, Brosnahan is set to serve as an executive producer, while Gyllenhaal won’t be appearing on screen this season.

The initial season drew its plot from Scott Turow’s novel “Presumed Innocent,” whereas the upcoming one finds its inspiration in Jo Murray’s yet-to-be-published book, titled “Dissection of a Murder.

As per the summary of the book, the narrative revolves around Leila Reynolds, a character who finds herself in charge of investigating the murder of a respected judge. Interestingly, the main suspect, Jack Millman, insists on Leila taking the lead in this case.

In this predicament, he’s stonewalling me, not saying a word. I can’t help but wonder how I’m supposed to show my mettle when it seems like this case is beyond winnable.

It’s crucial that she doesn’t lose. She needs to come up with the strongest possible argument. Winning trials isn’t just about persuading judges or other lawyers – it’s about convincing a jury. In this case, Leila is not only trying to keep Jack out of prison, but also to protect her own hidden truths.

The first season of the show attracted acclaim, and sits at a 79% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film is referred to as a “meticulously crafted, edge-of-your-seat, nerve-wracking courtroom drama that unfolds week by week, boasting outstanding performances, particularly an exceptional portrayal by Jake Gyllenhaal” and “one of the most captivating murder mysteries of the year”.

The New Yorker” called it a “fun, sensational, imperfect, hard-to-stop mystery”, while “The Times” stated that the series captures the feeling of watching one of those long, suspenseful, superb Hollywood thrillers from over 30 years ago.

Presumed Innocent season 1 is streaming now on Apple TV+.
