The detective drama starring Karen Pirie, which is cherished on ITV, has officially announced its comeback, releasing a few initial photographs.
In 2022, a three-part television show was released, focusing on the story of Lauren Lyle, a detective sergeant who took over an old, unresolved murder case from 25 years ago – the killing of a barmaid that remained unsolved.
Following its rise as one of ITV’s top-rated shows, the network decided to extend the series for another season, delighting fans who can now look forward to setting aside July on their calendars. Indeed, it has been officially confirmed that Karen Pirie will grace our screens once more with a set of three extended episodes.
The statement also included initial pictures, featuring the main character in her latest position as detective inspector. Enthusiasts will also catch a sneak peek of Chris Jenks returning to his charming role as Detective Constable Jason Murray.
In the second season of Val McDermid’s “A Darker Domain,” Karen appears to have earned the authority she has long strived for. As she settles into this powerful new position, the inspector is tasked with an notorious cold case that could bring her under great scrutiny.

The 30-year-old unsolved case, which left investigators puzzled and the public fascinated, revolves around the mysterious disappearance of a captivating young heiress and her two-year-old son. This event occurred after the ransom demands made by their kidnappers went unfulfilled.
A surprising turn of events occurs when a man’s corpse, associated with the original abduction, is found. This fresh evidence, not seen in decades, prompts Karen to put together an exceptional team for what might be their most daunting task yet.
This version maintains the original meaning while using simpler and more conversational language.
Under mounting scrutiny from her superior, the press, and mysterious entities, Karen dives further into the high-profile case, uncovering hidden animosities and painful truths. It seems the past remains very much alive in this complex investigation.

Fans and critics can look forward to enjoying the comeback of this series, as its debut season of detective drama has garnered a remarkable 91% positive feedback from 11 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
The general agreement about the site is that the “smart and intricate” TV series significantly updated the conventional gritty detective drama, and _The Independent_ commended it for presenting its narrative in a “fresh and consistent” way.
Karen Pirie will return on ITV in July.
