Materialists: The Surprising Depth Behind Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans’ New Film!
In the fresh movie titled “Materialists“, stars Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans, and Dakota Johnson take on roles that may initially appear to be in a lighthearted romantic-comedy. However, this film offers much deeper introspection than one might expect at first glance. Dakota Johnson portrays Lucy, a successful matchmaker based in New York City’s high society, who finds herself caught in a dilemma between her financially struggling ex-boyfriend John (Chris Evans) and the wealthy, seemingly flawless man Harry (Pedro Pascal).
Directed and penned by Celine Song, whose past works include “Past Lives”, it comes as no surprise that “Materialists” offers a profound examination of love. This film promises to stir a myriad of emotions in viewers as they embark on an emotional voyage alongside Lucy, a character trying to navigate her own life’s path.
Materialists Lives Up To Its Name
Regarding Lucy’s profession, it revolves around numbers. Although her job title might suggest she’s a matchmaker, focusing on emotions like chemistry and attraction, she approaches her work in a more tangible and self-centered manner that could be perceived as materialistic or narcissistic by those who use her services. It can be unusual to find oneself cheering for the protagonist in a movie, yet feeling uneasy about it due to these character traits.
Lucy frequently acknowledges her flawed nature, and it’s clear from the audience’s standpoint that her self-assessment is not unfounded. As we delve into her background, her intentions, and her treatment of John, she emerges as a challenging character to sympathize with. It isn’t until an incident involving one of her clients that Lucy begins to appear somewhat likable, as this event compels her to scrutinize her life and actions more closely.
Get Ready To Fall In Love With Chris Evans All Over Again
In a different setting, Chris Evans portrays Lucy’s charming former partner, John. A while has passed since they last crossed paths, until an unexpected encounter finds them both attending the same wedding, where John works as a waiter. Coincidentally, at this very same event, Lucy meets Harry, played by Pascal, who immediately shows interest in her.
Evans was an ideal fit to portray Captain America due to his charisma, good looks, and kind demeanor; he’s the sort of person who seems like the nicest individual you could ever encounter. In the movie “Materialists”, he displays a similar allure as he is deeply smitten with Lucy, always ready to support her through thick and thin. When Lucy encounters difficult days, Evans is the one she would dial instead of Harry.
Regardless of the fact that John is aware she has a partner, he’s ready to abandon his plans to aid her in times of distress and provide comforting words. His character truly exemplifies goodness, something that Evans excels at portraying on screen.
Pedro Pascal Leaves It All On The Table
It’s not necessary for me to explain that Pedro Pascal is a skilled actor. Whether it’s his role in “The Mandalorian” or “The Last of Us”, he consistently delivers more than expected. That’s one reason I’m eagerly anticipating his portrayal of Reed Richards in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”. Similarly, he demonstrates top-notch acting abilities in the upcoming film “Materialists”.
Right from the start, Pascal captures our sympathy. Unlike other wealthy men that Lucy encounters, he’s not arrogant. Instead, he’s compassionate, intelligent, and handsome – a perfect package. As Lucy puts it, he’s like a mythical unicorn: hard to believe he exists, but he does.
In the movie, I expected him to have a larger presence, but he delivers powerfully whenever he’s on-screen. Two moments particularly moved me to tears: One scene where he showed intense emotion really tugged at my heartstrings, and another poignant moment featuring Chris Evans did the same.
Overall Thoughts
Celine Song excels at crafting movies that provoke viewers to ponder their personal life choices. Her unique approach delves deeper into love and relationships than most others. The film “Materialists” sensitively addresses the sorrowful aspects of love and posits the idea that while no one is flawless, there remains someone who is ideally suited for you in this world.
Dakota Johnson is well-suited for the role of Lucy, but it’s Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans who truly shine in their performances. They each give it their all, leaving viewers cheering for both to emerge victorious. Without giving away any spoilers, the ending of the film “Materialists” is highly satisfying as it provides an outcome that we could only hope for.
Final Rating: 7/10
Materialists comes to theaters on June 13.
