Sweet Baby Inc. Takes Over Wu-Tang’s New Video Game – Is This a Disaster in the Making?
The legendary Wu-Tang Clan has made a comeback in the world of gaming, but what’s causing quite a stir among gamers is the unexpected presence of Sweet Baby Inc., who are now part of this much-anticipated return.
As a movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to share my thoughts on “Wu-Tang: Rise of the Deceiver,” a long-awaited return to the gaming world by the iconic rap group. After an impressive 25-year hiatus, this game was officially introduced during Summer Game Fest and at the commencement concert of Wu-Tang’s farewell tour. The development of this game is being spearheaded by Brass Lion Entertainment, a studio committed to creating captivating fictional universes that spotlight Black, Brown, and other underrepresented characters, cultures, and narratives.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I couldn’t help but notice something intriguing about the recent Wu-Tang project that wasn’t explicitly mentioned during the show: it carries the distinct mark of Sweet Baby Inc., a narrative consultancy firm that has garnered quite a bit of attention in the gaming world, often for reasons that stir controversy.
The confirmation wasn’t directly from Brass Lion or Xbox; instead, it came indirectly via MasterofTheTDS, an independent watchdog on the Gothic Therapy YouTube channel, who has been delving into the recent influence and connections of Sweet Baby Inc., for some time now.

On his June 7th update at X, he shared that the long-awaited game from Brass Lion Entertainment is now official – it’s called “Wu-Tang: Rise of the Deceiver.” The project has been developed with close collaboration between Kim Belair and Camerin Wild.
Kim Belair, the contentious leader and chief executive officer of Sweet Baby Inc., has gained notoriety for advocating that individuals should ‘frighten’ their marketing teams if they fail to recognize the importance of enforced diversity in video games, according to a renowned speech she delivered.

If you’re a creative professional who has spent numerous years in the AAA industry, she recommended presenting your ideas to your superiors. And if they fail to recognize the worth of what you’re requesting when you ask for consultancy or research, try grabbing a coffee with your marketing team and share with them the potential consequences if your requests aren’t fulfilled, effectively making them aware of the possibility.
Camerrin Wild serves as a narrative designer and sensitivity reader for Sweet Baby Inc. Last year, Wild gained attention when they presented a talk titled “Challenging Genre Conventions” at The Game Developers of Color Expo.
Wild emphasized that “our narratives serve a purpose beyond mere amusement,” advocating for a broader range of diverse and inclusive storytelling.

1. In a slide titled “Really, what’s the point?” one bullet point read straightforwardly: “Dismantling the gaming industry completely.” Another slide titled “Why do I stay then?” suggested it was “to demonstrate that spaces devoid of whiteness are where some of the most compelling narratives thrive.”
2. In a slide labeled “Hmm, what’s my purpose?”, one point stated frankly: “Wiping out the gaming industry from its roots.” Another slide titled “But why haven’t I left yet?” hinted at it being “to show that stories are most powerful in spaces where whiteness is not dominant.”
3. In a slide named “What’s my role here?”, one point was direct: “Destroying the gaming industry from its core.” Another slide labeled “Why haven’t I departed yet?” indicated it was “to illustrate that tales are told best in spaces where whiteness is not the norm.”
4. In a slide titled “What’s my mission?”, one point read clearly: “Overthrowing the gaming industry root and branch.” Another slide labeled “Why haven’t I quit yet?” suggested it was “to prove that stories are most captivating when they come from diverse spaces, not dominated by whiteness.”
5. In a slide asking “What’s my objective?”, one point stated plainly: “Collapsing the gaming industry altogether.” Another slide titled “Why haven’t I departed yet?” implied it was “to demonstrate that stories are at their best when they emerge from spaces where whiteness is not prevalent.”
In a video posted by MasterofTheTDS, Evan Narcisse (a senior writer at Brass Lion) confirmed Sweet Baby Inc.’s involvement in the Wu-Tang Clan game. Specifically, he mentioned that Belair and Wild were part of the project, serving in an advisory role.

Originally not well-known, Sweet Baby Inc. is currently facing industry-wide criticism. Critics contend that the company emphasizes “identity-centric” narratives over gameplay quality by focusing on social messaging. Proponents, however, maintain that they foster more inclusive gaming environments. However, the firm’s recent projects have faced both negative reviews and poor sales performance.
One of the standouts from the group is ‘Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League’ by Rocksteady, a superhero game that received significant criticism due to its awkward combat mechanics and fragmented narrative structure.

The game titled “South of Midnight” had significant involvement from Sweet Baby Inc., with Belair as the main narrative designer. However, it started with a disappointing number of approximately 1,400 concurrent players on Steam. This number quickly decreased. Within weeks, the game found it difficult to sustain more than a few hundred active players, leading to renewed criticism about its gameplay, storyline, and production decisions.
In the world of gaming, I’ve found myself at the center of some intense discussions lately. With each new release that underperforms, people are questioning my impact on shaping today’s games. It’s a topic that’s definitely sparked some passionate conversations!
As a die-hard film enthusiast, I’ve got to admit, learning that Sweet Baby Inc. is involved in Wu-Tang: Rise of the Deceiver has stirred up some doubts in me about the game’s artistic trajectory.

As per Bryna Dabby Smith, CEO of Brass Lion, the upcoming game is deeply rooted in the lore of the Wu-Tang group and a movie titled “Angel of Dust,” which Ghostface Killah co-produced and was directed by RZA. This project has been under development for three years and offers cooperative action gameplay, where players band together to defend their community, receiving powers from various members of the Wu-Tang Clan to do so.
In an interview with The Verge, Dabby Smith expressed that they aimed to construct a project that was developed completely from scratch. Essentially, it was shaped by the community and intended for the community.
In a project like “Wu-Tang: Rise of the Deceiver”, that particular philosophy might fit well. However, critics often claim that Sweet Baby Inc.’s participation tends to result in uniform storytelling and insensitive execution. Their consulting approach, which is widely used by publishers for cultural insights, continues to be one of the most contentious issues in contemporary game development.

For devoted Wu-Tang enthusiasts and gaming aficionados, the query arises: Will this be an authentic homage to the Wu-Tang Clan’s legacy, or merely another cultural artifact compromised by Sweet Baby Inc. and contemporary consultancy fads?
