BBC’s much-loved crime series branded ‘top quality British drama’ as it comes to an end

Season 2 of a beloved British drama starring Hugh Bonneville has just been added to BBC iPlayer.

In Chapter 2 of The Gold, we delve into the consequences that unfold post one of the most notable heists in British history. Drawing inspiration from the true events surrounding the Brink’s-Mat robbery in 1983, where an estimated £26 million in gold, diamonds, and cash were taken from a storage facility near Heathrow Airport, the storyline now unfolds as our main characters face arrest following the crime.

Upon apprehension of the gang, it becomes apparent that a significant portion of the stolen gold has vanished, leading to an extensive investigation spanning territories such as the Canary Islands, the Caribbean, Asia, and the Isle of Man.

This time, the narrative expands more than before. Since the source material doesn’t have a defined end, Season 2 of The Gold provides its own resolution for the storyline.

Feedback from critics has predominantly been favorable, with The Guardian labeling the series as an exceptional British drama, earning a four-star rating in their review.

Despite the acclaim though, it seems there won’t be another season of The Gold after this one.

The stars Charlotte Spencer and Emun Elliott, who portray characters Nicki Jennings and Tony Brightwell (task force members), affirmed that the series was planned as a two-season production from the outset.

Spencer shared with RadioTimes.com that people often don’t seem to understand this: “Even when I talk to friends and family who exclaim, ‘Wow, it has a second season?’, my response is usually ‘Yes, because they only discovered half of the gold’,” he explained.

There seems to be another fascinating narrative hidden away that I believe will appeal to them.

As someone who’s had the privilege of collaborating with Neil Forsyth a few times, I can tell you that his writing style is uncannily adept. He seems to have an innate sense of whether a piece will be a standalone, a two-parter, or even a three-parter. Impressive, right?

2023 saw the debut of the first season, which has been well-received so far, boasting a 92% approval rating among critics based on 26 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
