Sean Bean’s mystery period drama is now available to stream for free in the UK – here’s how to watch

Sean Bean’s period drama Shardlake is now available to stream for free in the UK.

The four-part TV show, modeled after CJ Sansom’s famous novels, primarily revolves around Arthur Hughes as Matthew Shardlake, a lawyer who previously led a sheltered life. However, when Thomas Cromwell (portrayed by Bean) – a trusted advisor to Henry VII – tasks him with investigating the murder of one of his commissioners, Shardlake’s world is dramatically altered.

In order for Cromwell’s political safety, it became crucial that Shardlake resolves the murder and facilitates the monastery’s closure in Scarnsea, as the commissioner had been amassing proof for its shutdown.

Back in 2024, the captivating series “Shardlake” graced our screens on Disney+, and it’s still there if you’re a subscriber. But here’s some good news for those without a subscription: As of today, every single episode of this incredible show has found its way onto ITVX, giving you the chance to immerse yourself in this tale for free!

In addition to Hughes and Bean, the cast of Shardlake includes Anthony Boyle, Babou Ceesay, Paul Kaye, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, Peter Firth, Matthew Steer, Brian Vernel, Irfan Shamji, David Pearse, Miles Barrow, Mike Noble, and Kimberley Nixon.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Shardlake will not be returning for a second season.

A Disney+ representative expressed their gratitude to Stephen Butchard for adapting the cherished novel of C J Sansom for the screen, to the exceptional lead actor Arthur Hughes and the entire cast and crew, and to our production partners The Forge and Runaway Fridge.

“We hope to work with all of our partners across these shows again in the future.”

Although the show was unfortunately canceled, it garnered largely favorable comments from critics, securing an impressive ‘Fresh’ rating of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The performance in Shardlake was convincing to some extent, yet it lacked authenticity at times. However, the story’s swift tempo prevents it from appearing as a dull lecture on Tudor intrigue. (This version attempts to maintain the original’s rhythm and tone while rephrasing certain sections for clarity and natural flow.)

In the meantime, the upcoming film by Bean titled “Deep Cover” will be released on Amazon Prime Video in the United Kingdom on June 12th.

In the role of Detective Sergeant DS Billings, a former Game of Thrones actor embarks on an undercover operation. He enlists the help of improv teacher Kat (Bryce Dallas Howard), along with her students Hugh (Nick Mohammed) and Marlon (Orlando Bloom). Their task is to blend into London’s criminal underworld by posing as dangerous criminals themselves.

Shardlake is available to stream on Disney+ and ITVX.

Our inaugural physical magazine from Digital Spy, “British Comedy Legends,” is available now! You can purchase it at your local newsstands or online for only £3.99.
