Nicole Scherzinger Wins Her First Tony Award for Her Performance in Sunset Blvd.
Mr. DeMille, Nicole Scherzinger is ready for her close-up.
8th June witnessed Nicole Scherzinger, aged 46, securing her first Tony Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical. This recognition was bestowed upon her for portraying Norma Desmond, a former star attempting a comeback, in the Broadway adaptation of the 1950 film “Sunset Blvd,” which was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
In a tearful acceptance speech at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan, Scherzinger expressed gratitude for making it possible for a girl of Hawaiian, Ukrainian, and Filipino descent to fulfill her dreams. As the seconds ticked away, she spoke about the demanding Broadway schedule and thanked her mother who gave birth to her at 18, her father, sister, and her entire family. She also acknowledged composer Andrew Lloyd Webber for his role in this achievement.
Born in Kentucky, Scherzinger has risen to prominence as a leading Asian Pacific theater actress. She’s fond of naming “Les Misérables,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” and “Miss Saigon” among her preferred musical productions.
Prior to becoming a Broadway star, Scherzinger was part of the highly successful pop band, the Pussycat Dolls. Having pursued fame as a pop vocalist herself, she finds her character Norma Desmond in the movie ‘Sunset Blvd’ particularly relatable due to their shared past in show business.
Time marches on for everyone, and Norma often grappled with the emotional weight of abandonment, profound solitude, invisibility, and unacceptance, as shared by Scherzinger during an interview with TIME. Many people, particularly those within the entertainment industry, can relate to these feelings.
2025 finds Scherzinger listed among the world’s most impactful individuals. In honor of this recognition, Tony Award-winning actress and vocalist Patti LuPone extolled her performance as “bold, daring, captivating, exquisitely beautiful, and in the end, poignantly moving.” She concluded her tribute with an applause for Scherzinger: “Brava, Divina.
Just recently, it was announced that Sunset Blvd. will have an extended performance run on Broadway until the end of July 20.
