Tom Cruise got trapped for real during Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’s best sequence
In the course of filming Mission: Impossible – Fallout, stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood disclosed a genuine predicament experienced by Tom Cruise during the shooting of the movie’s risky underwater sequence, where he found himself actually trapped.
In late May, the sequel to the 2023 film “Dead Reckoning” hit the big screens, featuring Tom Cruise reprising his role as Ethan Hunt along with his IMF colleagues, who were on a mission to thwart Gabriel (Esai Morales) and an AI system named The Entity.
In the most thrilling scene from the film, Ethan plunges into the submerged remnants of the Sevastopol submarine in an attempt to recover the original source code of the Entity.

Meanwhile, the submarine gets dislodged and starts rolling beneath the water, while explosions from torpedoes echo all around. This sets off an anxious struggle for survival.
In a discussion on The Empire Film Podcast, Eastwood expressed that employing CGI (computer-generated imagery) for torpedoes would have been more straightforward. However, Cruise opted to perform the stunt in reality to ensure the viewers didn’t experience a sense of detachment.
He stated that under normal circumstances, it would have been quite simple for Tom to navigate through and respond to computer-generated torpedoes as they approached.
It seems that was the best approach, but then comes the addition of computer-generated bubble trails, requiring a matching with the original shots.
You’ve genuinely performed an incredible series of moves, but all of a sudden, some viewers are saying, “I think it’s computer-generated imagery. It feels detached to me.
Tom insists on keeping his audience fully engaged and authentic. He’s adamant they shouldn’t be misled… In essence, he yearns to perform genuinely, responding to the situations as an actor would.
During the filming process, despite safety precautions, Eastwood disclosed an incident where Cruise found himself “caught” or “stuck” unexpectedly.
He mentioned that there was an instance where he found himself in a tight spot, but it wasn’t too serious since Tom has an impressive ability to hold his breath for extended periods. In fact, before he had fully succumbed to the situation, I was already working to free the object from him.
More recently, it’s been verified that Cruise achieved a new world record with yet another astonishing stunt in the film.
The performer earned the Guinness World Record for “the greatest number of fire-jumping parachute dives by an individual.” By jumping from a helicopter while wearing a parachute soaked in fuel 16 times, he ultimately detached the scorched remains of his initial chute and successfully deployed a second one. This allowed him to safely land.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is out now in cinemas.
