What Happened to Dr. Fiona Wallace? The Unresolved Mystery in Dept. Q That Frustrates Fans!
The nine episodes of Dept. Q made up an engaging mystery surrounding a missing person, but there’s one lingering question I can’t shake off. The series starts dramatically with Carl Morck (Matthew Goode) near death, leading to his demotion to a new cold cases unit. In the story set in Edinburgh, detective Morck grapples emotionally with his own shooting incident as he investigates Merritt Lingard (Chloe Pirrie), a lawyer who vanished four years ago.
Although the probe into Morck’s self-shooting progressed slowly throughout the series, Morck and his team swiftly delved into significant findings about Merritt’s disappearance. They examined a multitude of potential suspects and witnesses, ultimately locating Merritt herself in the concluding chapters of Dept. Q. However, some loose ends remained unresolved, hinting at possible storylines for a future season. Regrettably, one character from Dept. Q never received a conclusion, leaving me wondering about their ultimate fate.
What Happened to Dr. Fiona Wallace?
This Dept. Q Character Just Disappeared
Morck and his team explore various possible suspects in their quest to find Merritt Lingard, dismissing each one along the way. Some individuals, such as Steven Miller’s rock-climbing companions, are considered innocent from the start, while others, like Merritt’s superior, have been convicted of unrelated offenses. However, the narratives for all suspects eventually reach a conclusion. The only character whose storyline remains unresolved is Dr. Fiona Wallace (Michelle Duncan), who served as Merritt’s legal guardian and was his brother’s caretaker.
In the early stages of the series, Dr. Wallace enters the scene as Morck investigates potential financial gains from Merritt’s disappearance. The TV show Dept. Q discloses that Merritt and William (Tom Bulpett) had inherited a substantial amount of wealth from their grandmother following her death. Due to William’s violent incident and mental health issues, his funds were managed by his guardian, Merritt. However, after Merritt vanished, Dr. Wallace took William under his care at his institution and assumed the role of William’s legal guardian, gaining control over his finances.
In Department Q, Morck’s interpretation of the plan is presented, but unfortunately, viewers are left in the dark about the fate of Dr. Wallace. Although it’s likely that she exploited William for his wealth rather than caring for his welfare, as evidenced by all her patients being sedated (with Rose and Akram discovering this), it’s peculiar that Department Q doesn’t depict the consequences of this act. Even a brief glimpse of the other patients being saved and Dr. Wallace and her team being apprehended for their misdeeds would have added a satisfying conclusion to the story.
At Least The Team Got William Out
Merritt’s Brother Was Saved From Dr. Wallace
Though the ending left uncertainty about Dr. Wallace’s final destiny, it was gratifying that William, who had been forced into the situation against his will due to his aphasia and inability to express himself, was eventually rescued. It was heartening to see Morck, his team, and Claire Marsh, William’s former caretaker (Shirley Henderson), make an effort to understand him and cater to his needs.
Following his discovery that Dr. Wallace was drugging him, Morck returned William to Claire, who appeared genuinely affectionate towards him as if he were her son. This provided a sense of security for William, something he hadn’t felt in years. The abhorrent nature of Dr. Wallace’s actions is amplified by the potential long-term harm they could cause his patients. Fortunately, Morck, Akram, and Rose stepped in to save him when they did. What makes this situation even more heartening is that Department Q’s conclusion allowed William the long-awaited reunion he truly deserved.
The TV show doesn’t clarify whether William and Merritt manage to attain justice for Dr. Wallace’s actions, but this isn’t crucial because their reunion after four years gives the series the satisfying conclusion it requires. Given all they’ve been through as teenagers and adults, seeing them reunited in Dept. Q is deeply moving, despite some lingering unanswered questions.
