What to Read Next
BlacKkKlansman
2018 film by Spike Lee received massive praise upon its release and later earned him his inaugural competitive Oscar in the category of Best Adapted Screenplay.
Drawing from Ron Stallworth’s captivating memoir, “Black Klansman,” I found myself immersed in the gripping account of a daring undercover operation. As a devoted fan, I followed the journey of a courageous former police officer (portrayed by John David Washington) who masterfully infiltrated the Colorado Springs chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. In this audacious endeavor, he was ably assisted by his Jewish surrogate, Philip ‘Flip’ Zimmerman (brilliantly played by Adam Driver).
In simpler terms, Digital Spy described it as a strong reaction to a troubling time in the past, serving as a sobering reminder that prejudice and hatred persist, while also praising it as an excellent and humorous form of entertainment, awarding it a perfect five stars.
Airing on Sunday (8 June) on BBC One at 12.10am. Available on BBC iPlayer afterwards.
Four Weddings and a Funeral
In 1994, Hugh Grant’s career took off with a classic romantic comedy, famously known for its series of social events. This film, penned by Richard Curtis (of “Love Actually” fame), is followed by our group of friends as they navigate through these events. Notably, the movie contains several unforgettable scenes, such as that heartfelt rain-soaked sequence.
As a gamer diving into the world of blockbuster hits, I can’t help but share my excitement over “Four Weddings and a Funeral.” This movie not only captured hearts with its enchanting storyline but also broke records by earning an impressive $245 million at the box office on a humble budget of just $4.4 million. Andie MacDowell, Kristin Scott Thomas, Simon Callow, John Hannah, Rowan Atkinson, James Fleet, and the late, talented Charlotte Coleman were part of this stellar cast that brought this film to life.
Airing on Sunday (8 June) on BBC One at 10.30pm. Available on BBC iPlayer afterwards.
Road to Perdition
In this 2002 crime drama, Tom Hanks takes on the role of a mob enforcer. He embarks on a quest for revenge, together with his son, against the ruthless mob boss responsible for the murder of their loved ones.
The movie “Road to Perdition” is a cinematic adaptation of the DC Comics with the same title. It showcases Daniel Craig in a role prior to his Bond character, alongside Jude Law, Stanley Tucci, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Paul Newman, who delivered his final live-action theatrical performance in this film. Directed by Sam Mendes, it received immense praise upon its debut and boasts an impressive 82% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Airing on Saturday (7 June) on ITV1 at 11.20pm. Available on ITVX afterwards.
Jumanji
Prior to the release of sequels featuring Rock and Jack Black, there was the original ’90s Jumanji movie starring Robin Williams. This fantasy adventure marked the beginning of the series, revolving around a mysterious board game that springs to life. Two siblings stumble upon a man who has been trapped within it for decades and must navigate numerous perils as they strive to complete the game.
Besides the late great actress, Williams, this movie showcases Kirsten Dunst in her initial acting stint, and it was a massive success at the box office – ultimately ranking as the 10th highest-earning film of 1995.
Airing on Sunday (8 June) on ITV1 at 1.40pm. Available on ITVX afterwards.
A Time to Kill
A prominent lineup featuring Sandra Bullock, Samuel L Jackson, and Matthew McConaughey leads this 1996 courtroom drama. Originating from the 1989 novel by John Grisham, the narrative centers around a Mississippi attorney who takes on the case of a Black man accused of murdering two white men who had raped his young daughter.
At that point in time, the film achieved significant commercial success at the box office, despite receiving a somewhat divided response from critics. In addition to the late Donald Sutherland, the cast includes his son Kiefer, as well as Octavia Spencer, who would later win an Oscar and make her movie debut with this production.
Airing on Sunday (8 June) on Channel 4 at 10.55pm. Available on Channel 4 afterwards.
