The Hidden Fate of a Key Harry Potter Villain the Movies Never Showed
Transforming a book into a movie is no small task, especially when it comes to a series as extensive as seven volumes. It’s truly remarkable when a franchise can maintain its success on both the written and visual platforms, like Harry Potter has done so admirably. The movies beautifully captured the tale of The Boy Who Lived with a deft touch and the perfect balance of enchanting whimsy. However, I found it peculiar that the narrative thread of Peter Pettigrew was left incomplete in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.
In adapting the Harry Potter books to film, it’s just not feasible to include every detail from the source material. However, Peter Pettigrew’s storyline was crucial to the overall narrative of Harry Potter. At first, he appeared as the Weasley family’s pet rat, Scabbers, but in reality, he was Peter Pettigrew, who had been transformed into a rat by a spell. Up until the events of Prisoner of Azkaban, Pettigrew had been killed by Sirius Black, or so it seemed. However, in a stunning revelation at the end of the same book, Scabbers was revealed to be none other than Peter Pettigrew, the real traitor responsible for betraying the Potter family and leading to Lily and James’ deaths, with Sirius Black unjustly imprisoned in Azkaban as a result.
Peter Pettigrew Was the Main Villain of the Series
It’s undeniable that Lord Voldemort was the main antagonist in the world of Harry Potter. However, I believe the entire story might not have unfolded as it did if Peter hadn’t betrayed his friends. James, Remus, and Sirius always accepted and respected Peter. They transformed into Animagi together, but none of them could have foreseen how fragile Pettigrew’s loyalty and strength truly were. When Voldemort threatened Lily, James, and Harry, they used the Fidelius Charm to protect Godric’s Hollow, but made a critical error in their choice of Secret Keeper.
Instead of relying on Sirius or Remus, Lily and James selected Peter as the Secret Keeper for the Fidelity Charm, believing it would confuse Voldemort by choosing an unconventional choice. Regrettably, Voldemort recognized that Pettigrew was the weakest link, and he managed to turn him against his friends. Pettigrew betrayed Godric’s Hollow’s location to Voldemort on October 31, 1981, which led to the tragic murder of the Potters on that fateful night. Despite this, Harry was the first person in the world to survive the Killing Curse, but at a terrible cost: losing his parents who sacrificed themselves to protect him.
Peter Pettigrew’s act of betrayal was profoundly hurtful on multiple fronts, as he turned against both the Potters and Sirius. It was clear that he showed no regret or remorse in masterminding their murders. However, it seems people often overlook the fact that he was also involved in the murder of an innocent child that fateful night. Essentially, Peter Pettigrew sealed the fate of three individuals, including baby Harry, by allying with Voldemort, though his life was spared due to a intricate magical maneuver.
Following the tragic deaths of James and Lily, Peter orchestrated a bombing that resulted in the loss of 12 non-magical lives. He then severed one of his own fingers and falsely accused Sirius of betraying the Potters and being responsible for the Muggle deaths. Consequently, Sirius was wrongfully imprisoned at Azkaban for twelve years, while Peter disguised himself as a rat and went into hiding. Remaining in rat form ever since, he eventually found a home with the Weasley family as a pet. For many years, Peter successfully evaded punishment for his crimes. However, it wasn’t until Sirius Black managed to break free from Azkaban and approached Harry in his third year that the truth about Peter’s actions was revealed.
His Ending From the Book Never Made It to the Movie
Peter Pettigrew remained loyal to Voldemort long after the Dark Lord had vanished, and it was Pettigrew who assisted in Voldemort’s physical resurrection. To accomplish this, he severed his own right hand as part of the spell, which ultimately brought about Voldemort’s return to the world of the living. This grisly act would not have been possible without Pettigrew’s self-sacrifice. In recognition of his faithful service, the Dark Lord bestowed upon him a silver prosthetic hand; however, this gift came with certain restrictions.
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but reflect on Peter Pettigrew’s role in the saga of Lord Voldemort. Despite his unwavering service and significant contributions to Voldemort’s grand victories, it was evident that Peter’s heart never truly belonged to the Dark Lord. He received the Dark Mark, symbolizing his allegiance, but the reality was that Peter Pettigrew was never as ruthless or ferocious as other Death Eaters.
While he participated in heinous acts without much hesitation, it was also evident that he spared Bertha Jorkins and Frank Bryce from death whenever possible. This subtle act of compassion, even amidst the darkness, hinted at a complex character who served Voldemort, yet harbored a softer side.
Peter Pettigrew, a character from “Harry Potter,” was primarily driven by fear rather than strong beliefs to act as a villain. His life was marked by terror, which influenced his loyalty towards Voldemort. Even his past loyalties had been uncertain, and Voldemort was determined not to let this happen again. As a consequence of this fear, when Pettigrew received the silver hand in exchange for the one he’d sacrificed during a ritual, he was warned that any future doubts would be punished severely. True to form, this came to pass. In “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” when Harry Potter and his companions were captured at Malfoy Manor, it was Dobby who used Apparition to transport them to safety, leading ultimately to Pettigrew’s downfall.
In the course of an inquiry, Peter found himself attacked by Ron and Harry, who successfully disarmed him. In a bid to disable Harry, Peter resorted to using his bare hands, but Wormtail, reminded of the life-saving act performed by Harry during his third year, released his grip. Regrettably, this act of compassion proved fatal for Peter, as it set off a chain of events. The silver hand, believed to be cursed by Voldemort, sensed disloyalty, and reacted autonomously, strangling Pettigrew. Despite Ron and Harry’s best efforts, they were unable to remove the silver hand from Pettigrew until he had perished. This incident, unfortunately, was not included in the movie adaptations.
It Was a Difficult Scene, But One That Was Incredibly Important
In simpler terms, the movie didn’t fully resolve an essential plot point about Peter Pettigrew. His betrayal of the Potters was a heartbreaking event in the story, and viewers felt satisfied when they saw him getting hit by Dobby’s spell in Malfoy Manor. However, it wasn’t clear whether he died or was only injured, and this scene was portrayed for comedic effect. This left many movie fans feeling unsatisfied because it didn’t give the proper ending to the arc involving Peter, James, Lily, Harry, and Sirius.
The situation was challenging and disheartening that Peter met his end for a single act of compassion in his wretched existence. Representing this sequence on screen would undoubtedly be tough, yet necessary to complete the storyline. Peter’s betrayal of his friends was unforgivable, but this incident and his ultimate destiny were the sole elements that made him somewhat redeemable. It also served as suitable retribution for all the misery caused by Peter Pettigrew, who believed that siding with Voldemort would bring him power and prestige. Instead, it wreaked havoc on numerous lives, led to the demise of innocent people, and sent an individual to prison for a crime he did not commit. I eagerly anticipate that the upcoming TV adaptation of Harry Potter will include this scene when the time is right, as it could be one of the most crucial moments in the series. Omiting it from the movies felt unjust to both the Potters and Sirius.
