Edi Gathegi Reveals Why He Won’t Talk About His ‘X-Men: First Class’ Role
Starting last year, DC Studios was rebranded, with its first venture being the Max original animated series, “Creature Commandos.” Moving forward, James Gunn’s version of Superman is expected to significantly influence future movies and TV shows due to widespread enthusiasm for his interpretation of the Man of Steel. This new take on Superman also promises a variety of DC heroes and villains, including Mister Terrific, portrayed by Edi Gathegi. Interestingly, Gathegi has previously played a Marvel character, but he tends not to talk about it extensively.
During an appearance on the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast, Gathegi was asked if he considered Mister Terrific his first opportunity to portray a genuine superhero. The query seemed designed to bring up his brief tenure in the Marvel Universe, but Gathegi gave a humorous reply. He playfully said, “We don’t discuss that. It’s too delicious. I’m overjoyed about my redemption arc in the fresh DC Universe. I can’t wait to motivate a new generation of young Black children with this new superhero.
In Matthew Vaughn’s 2011 movie X-Men: First Class, the character we’re discussing is Darwin, one of the young mutants taken under the wing of Professor Charles Xavier (played by James McAvoy) and Erik Lehnsherr (portrayed by Michael Fassbender). Regrettably, Darwin didn’t last long in the film, as he was swiftly eliminated by Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon), just moments after being recruited. This unfortunate turn of events left many viewers feeling it was a missed opportunity, and may have been the reason the actor decided not to discuss the character further.
‘X-Men: First Class’ Wasted the Potential of Edi Gathegi’s Darwin
In the film X-Men: First Class, some characters didn’t fully develop due to director Matthew Vaughn’s efforts to increase tension in the semi-reboot. For instance, Edi Gathegi’s character Darwin, along with others, ended up being insignificant in later X-Men movies. Sadly, many mutants introduced in this movie were killed off-screen and not carried forward in the sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past. Despite his unfortunate end, Darwin had a unique set of powers that could have added depth to the X-Men group.
Darwin exhibits an incredible knack for adapting to various environments, even developing gills to breathe underwater. However, Sebastian Shaw exploits his energy-absorbing abilities to overpower Darwin’s adaptations, effectively eliminating the mutant with seeming ease. Regrettably, this occurred far more swiftly than the rest of the supporting characters in the story. Other mutants, such as Angel, Azazel, Emma, and Banshee, suffered a similar fate off-screen between films. Their untimely deaths are only hinted at in subsequent movies, leaving behind a sense of unrealized potential, much like Darwin’s.
It’s great news that Gathegi gets another opportunity to shine in comic book films with Superman. Mister Terrific is known for being one of the smartest characters in the DC Universe, utilizing his intellectual abilities to develop advanced technology which he employs both in crime-fighting and solving intricate mysteries and challenges. Here’s hoping that the character gets a substantial role in Superman and potentially even leads his own project in the future.
