George R.R. Martin Reacts to A24’s Elden Ring Movie Director Choice

The author discusses the selection of a director for the forthcoming film version based on A24’s decision, with ‘Game of Thrones’ creator Martin expressing his opinions openly about the movie, as he was responsible for creating the world-building in the original video game.

In his blog post, Martin discussed A24’s selection of director for an upcoming project. He expressed admiration for A24 as a top-notch studio and Alex Garland as an exceptional filmmaker in his writing. Martin also referenced a fan YouTube video titled “Why the Elden Ring Movie Won’t Suck,” suggesting that he endorses this viewpoint. The project, which is tentatively scheduled for release in May 2025, includes Martin as one of its producers, but further details like casting announcements and a specific release date have not been disclosed yet.

Apart from his directorial role, Garland is also slated to write the script for the Elden Ring movie. He has a rich history of both directing and writing successful films and video games. His work spans projects like 28 Days Later (and its upcoming sequels, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple), Dredd, and Ex Machina. In 2010, he co-wrote the video game Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and served as a story supervisor for 2013’s DmC: Devil May Cry. Notably, Ex Machina garnered him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, alongside three British Independent Film Awards for Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best British Independent Film.

The upcoming movie, “The Elden Ring,” is inspired by Bandai Namco’s 2022 action RPG game, overseen by Hidetaka Miyazaki (known for “Dark Souls” and “Armored Core”). In this open-world game, players embark on a mission to mend the Elden Ring and ascend as the new Elden Lord. The richly detailed backstory of “Elden Ring” was written by Martin, while Miyazaki handled the in-game storyline.

The game titled Elden Ring received countless Game of the Year honors following its debut and is frequently referred to as one of the greatest ever made. To date, it has surpassed sales of 30 million units, and its additional content, Shadow of the Erdtree, was released in 2024 to equally impressive reviews. A multiplayer spin-off game named Elden Ring Nightrein hit the market on May 30 and has already sold more than 3.5 million copies.

Beyond the upcoming Elden Ring movie, Martin continues to labor on wrapping up the highly acclaimed Game of Thrones series, A Song of Ice and Fire. The last book, The Winds of Winter, has been under development since 2010 – though fans eagerly await its release, Martin is meticulously working to ensure a fitting conclusion to the tale, taking all the time needed to achieve his creative vision.

In a previous post, the author expressed, “[The readers] seem to only be interested in The Winds of Winter. I’ve heard you mention this point frequently.” Later, he directly addressed his audience, stating: “Some of you may become angry with this statement, as you do with any news that isn’t related to Westeros or The Winds of Winter. You’ve lost faith in me, or in the book’s completion.

The Elden Ring film adaptation does not yet have a release date.
