John Wick Connection Revealed: Shocking Spoilers from Ballerina You Must Know
Before catching the new film “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina” in cinemas now, it’s a good idea to get up to speed with the action series headed by Keanu Reeves, known as the John Wick franchise. For those who might not have time to watch the entire eight-hour series, starting with the main character John Wick embarking on a killing spree due to the murder of his beloved dog, here’s a summary of how “Ballerina” fits into the John Wick universe.
In the fifth installment of the John Wick series, titled Ballerina, Ana de Armas portrays Eve Macarro, a former ballet dancer transformed into an assassin. Just like John Wick, Eve was trained by Ruska Roma, a crime organization that will be further discussed later. Upon discovering her family’s hidden links to a ruthless army of killers, Eve sets out on a personal vendetta against the Chancellor, the tyrannical leader portrayed by Gabriel Byrne, a newcomer to the John Wick series. The Chancellor is responsible for the death of her father when she was young.
In the trailer for the film “Ballerina,” it’s shown that the character Baba Yaga, known as John Wick in other stories, is involved in Eve’s mission for revenge. However, whether he’s an ally or adversary remains uncertain. For those who don’t mind knowing plot details ahead of time, here’s a brief overview of how John Wick factors into the “Ballerina” plot.
When does Ballerina take place?
In essence, many scenes in Ballerina unfold concurrently with the events of the 2019 movie, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. This film sets off with John Wick being expelled from the High Table, an influential council consisting of 12 individuals who rule over the most potent underworld crime syndicates. The expulsion occurred due to his actions of slaying one of their members within the New York Continental, a hotel that serves as a sanctuary for assassins. In this universe, violating the rules results in severe penalties.
Facing a large reward for his capture, John Wick is compelled to defend himself using whatever tools come his way – knives, firearms, horses, and remarkably, a book from the New York Public Library. He’s up against the world and senses the clock ticking. To stay alive, he must act swiftly. In desperation, John returns to where it all started: the Tarkovsky Theater, the covert base of the Ruska Roma in NYC, hoping that the Director (Anjelica Huston, reprising her role from Ballerina) will grant him one final favor before time runs out.
Who are the Ruska Roma?
In the thrilling tale of “John Wick,” I’m part of one of the criminal syndicates, the Ruska Roma, that holds a powerful position at the High Table. Our organization, primarily composed of skilled contract killers from Belarus, disguises our lethal training facility under the guise of a ballet academy. As the Director, leader of the Ruska Roma, I took in a young orphan named John Wick, later known as Jardani Jovonovich, and molded him into an agile fighter. Over time, I became not just his trainer but also his mentor and a mother figure to him.
John Wick, known as one of the most formidable assassins in the High Table’s history, was also a hired gun for the Tarasov Mob, another criminal organization. Yet, he remains a member of the Ruska Roma, a fact that his Cross of Lorraine tattoo, a symbol associated with the Russian Orthodox Church and the Ruska Roma, confirms. He is hoping that his previous service will be sufficient to persuade her to officially discharge him from his duties, even if it means confronting the wrath of the High Table.
The Director reluctantly releases him, making sure to inform him that by cutting ties with the Ruska Roma, he would no longer be able to seek their aid. He must face things on his own from now on. However, as anyone who’s watched “John Wick: Chapter 4” can attest, even in a world as brutally violent as this, one can always return home.
What is Eve’s connection to John Wick?
A Ballerina finds herself in the identical instant as in ‘Parabellum’, but this time observing the encounter between John Wick and The Director from a fresh perspective.
In the movie ‘Ballerina’, Eve, much like John Wick, was taken in by the Ruska Roma following her father’s demise. Interestingly, it is revealed that Winston Scott, the manager of New York Continental in the ‘John Wick’ series (portrayed by Ian McShane), played a significant role in facilitating Eve’s adoption within this organization. This suggests that Winston’s cross tattoo, reappearing in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’, might symbolize a stronger bond with the group. However, it appears to dispel the speculation that he was John Wick’s biological father. Notably, Eve also sports several significant tattoos, which are prominently displayed throughout the movie ‘Ballerina’.
Eve, not being a professional ballerina, has instead set her sights on mastering the art of contract killing, aiming to reach the same level of proficiency as John Wick. However, when they cross paths in a theater, Eve is still in the early stages of learning the assassin’s trade, seeking guidance from the legendary John Wick. At that moment, John Wick has grown weary of the killer’s life and was living peacefully before a group of Russian gangsters took his beloved pet dog given by his late wife. When Eve asks him how to become an expert killer, he advises against it, urging her to exit the theater and abandon the assassin’s path. He encourages her to carve out a new direction for herself before it’s too late.
John Wick doesn’t always follow such advice, as the events in “Parabellum” and upcoming “John Wick: Chapter 4” demonstrate; his story is far from over. Interestingly, Eve experiences a Rashomon-like moment, paving the way for her own journey inspired by John Wick. She’ll discover that every choice she makes comes with significant repercussions, even potentially lethal ones.
How does Ballerina end?
In the climactic scene of “Ballerina,” Eve embarks on a quest to find the man responsible for her father’s death: the Chancellor, a powerful figure leading a sect-like band of assassins. This isn’t merely professional revenge for Eve; it’s deeply personal as she uncovers that the Chancellor is her maternal grandfather. Her father had been attempting to save her from the life she was destined for, and the Chancellor ended his life. Unlike John Wick, the Chancellor views actions as predetermined by fate. He firmly believes that Eve is meant to continue her family’s violent legacy and will go to great lengths—even killing her—to bring her back into their ranks.
For many years, the Chancellor and his adherents resided in the secluded Austrian mountain village of Hallstatt. Arriving with the intention of ending the Chancellor’s reign, Eve found herself confronted by the entire town of skilled assassins alone. Using an assortment of weapons ranging from ice skates to katana swords to flamethrowers, she fought valiantly against them. However, her unauthorized act of retribution did not sit well with the Director who chose to aid the Chancellor for self-preservation and the safety of the Ruska Roma. In the film Parabellum, the Director expresses her preference for a collective rather than an individual threat, be it John Wick or Eve. To eliminate Eve, she would have to summon the heavy artillery: the recently ostracized John Wick.
The climax of “Ballerina” unfolds before the commencement of “Chapter 4,” following the happenings of “Parabellum.” As the curtains close on “Parabellum,” Winston takes aim at John Wick, shooting him in a desperate bid to safeguard himself and the Continental. Remarkably, John Wick endures not just the gunshot, but also a plunge from a skyscraper. Pursued relentlessly by the High Table and numerous others who seek the substantial $20 million bounty on his head, John Wick remains in hiding.
In the midst of his own affairs, it’s puzzling why John Wick would aid the Ruska Roma, but adhering to the High Table’s guidelines, he feels obligated to protect those who bear a mark. This brings him to Hallstatt, initially on a mission to eliminate Eve, yet their past encounter has surfaced. It’s been barely a year since their covert meeting, and both have remained entrenched in the assassin trade. Circumstances force them into a confrontation, but John Wick chooses not to harm Eve, instead issuing a warning about the rules and penalties that come with their chosen path. He grants her until midnight to eliminate the Chancellor and depart, recognizing that it’s unrealistic to hinder someone from avenging a lost loved one.
Instead of merely extending her time, John Wick decides to aid Eve in her mission, acting as her protective guardian angel. Armed with a sniper rifle, he bravely repels a flamethrower-wielding assassin who had cornered Eve, followed by single-handedly defeating a group of skilled assassins. It is only after this that Eve manages to reach the Chancellor before time expires. Like John Wick, Eve required assistance and some good fortune to accomplish her final mission. And, as he has done numerous times in the past, John Wick makes the decision to stand by her side.
There’s nothing quite as satisfying as seeing Eve defeat her maniacal grandfather and the horde of psychopathic killers in a pulse-pounding, side-splitting sequence. But what makes it even sweeter is watching John Wick inform the Director, “It’s done.” However, he wasn’t referring to his own mission completion – that was handled by Eve. This just goes to show that John Wick’s world is our playground.
Watching Eve bring down her maniacal grandpa and a town full of psycho killers in an action-packed, laugh-out-loud scene offers a tantalizing treat. Yet, nothing beats the sweetness of John Wick telling the Director, “It’s done,” only to reveal that he didn’t accomplish the task – it was Eve who did instead. It’s another gentle nudge reminding us all that we’re merely spectators in John Wick’s world.
